QuoteReplyTopic: any tips on colouring 3 month roots Posted: February 14 2007 at 11:11pm
I am planning to colour my roots but they are probably going to be quite long. I was practising sectioning my long hair and think it will be quite a hard job. Anyone have any tips or hints to make it easier, I have never done this ever and may have to as I dont think I can afford to go to the hairdresser
For the future, it is much easier to do roots that are
less than a centimeter long, as you are less likely to get a noticeable
line of demarcation (because even if you get one, it hides in the
shadow of your scalp). This does mean doing roots about every 3
weeks, which is a commitment. For now, you may just have to try
to do the dark parts only, then after you have them close to the same
color, dye all of your hair again (covering the length too) so that the
line of demarcation gets blended (the second dye job may only need to
be short in time, like 10 minutes...I don't know what color you are
going and from what color). In the future, if you do your roots
frequently, you should not need to refresh your length (which is
damaging) unless you have a color that fades.
Do test strand, for 3 reasons. To make sure you aren't
going to overdamage your length, to be sure that dyeing it all again
will not make it come out any funny colors, and to make sure that you
won't do it if it isn't going to work to cover the potential line of
demarcation, giving you damage for nothing. (The length may
absorb more color than the roots if you're going darker, or if you're
going lighter, it may come out different in the other direction, so
definitely test strand the whole process so you don't mess up your hair
with either step. Test strands will also help you get the timing
right).

my roots are a dark blonde and the rest is blonde highlights and low lights, my hair has suffered damage from colouring all over 4 times in one year (the box said if you havent coloured in a few months to do all over! Bad advise) I want to use clairol medium ash blonde 106b and plan to do roots and just refresh the rest for 10 minutes and pray! Thanks for your advise
