Hi, I'm new to the forum, and hope someone can help me. I'm 48 and have at least 50% grey hair. I'm noticing more and more resistant greys that don't pick up any color at all. My stylist has tried putting developer on first, but it didn't help. She doesn't know what else to do. I'm not ready to go grey. Can someone please help! Thanks.
I am not a pro, and I hope a pro answers what I'm about to say in case this needs to be cleared up.
I have read that gray hair needs to be pre-softened with 20% peroxide
for 10 min. or so before its dyed. I wonder if there's not some
confusion here because 20% would be WAY stronger than any developer
currently sold that I'm aware of (I believe, if I'm correct, that 50
volume developer would be 15% peroxide, and this is strong enough to
burn you pretty quickly). Perhaps what they meant is it should be
softened with 20 volume peroxide developer, not 20% peroxide.
If however, they really do mean 20% peroxide, the developer she put on
your grays may not have been strong enough to truly "soften" the
resistant grays, and that may be why it didn't work. I work in a
lab though, and having burnt myself with 30% peroxide in a matter of 3
minutes, I certainly wouldn't want 20% peroxide put on my sensitive
scalp. I hope someone comes and helps us clear up this issue!

Hi Susan, Thanks for responding to my post. I'm not sure either if 20% developer is the same as 20% peroxide. Hopefully a professional hairdresser will answer this. I just had my hair done last week, but next time I go I can ask my stylist. This is driving me crazy! Kathy
20 volume developer is not the same as 20% peroxide. 20 volume
developer is 6% peroxide if I remember correctly, I am just not sure if
it was 20 volume or 20% you are supposed to use on grays (there
are webpages that say 20% peroxide, but that is so strong it will
burn people, that is why I am not sure they are correct).
If you do find out from your stylist, come back and let me know what she says! Thanks!
