QuoteReplyTopic: How is your hair doing these days? Posted: May 21 2007 at 6:43pm
Hey everyone,
Here it is, May 21, and summer is fast approaching -- at least, for those of us in the northern hemisphere.
How are y'all doing with your long hair these days? How do you deal with (or plan to) the heat of the summer? How long is your hair now? Are you growing your hair longer, maintaining the present length, or going shorter (or thinking of it )?
I wear my hair braided whenever I venture out of the home, so it's off my neck and back. It is definitely at its "terminal" length -- longest strands (3 of them) touch my ankle. And I'm not planning any change in hair length, though I wouldn't mind if it were to grow longer (so that I could trim my hair to ankle-length).
[ETA: Also, what styles are you wearing your hair in these days?]
Hi! My hair is about an inch above waist length now. I plan to grow it longer. I will maintain it at tailbone when it gets there, or decide if I want it longer than that then. Its frizzier than I expected it to be, but I use oil to help.
I've been wearing it in different kinds of buns since its too hot now. Chinese bun, infinity bun, the one Bob S called the "tornado", or just my lazy stab-a-stick-through-it regular bun. When I want it to look cool I wear a long hair cinch in faux french braid style down one side of my head, this always gets lots of compliments!

My hair is doing pretty good. I had mine at tailbone a few years back, but that was just too long for me. It's a little above waistlength now, which is where I've been keeping it. It get a trim every 6 weeks.
My hair has also become a much lighter color. I've decided to stop fighting the sun, plus the greys don't show as much ;-)
My stylist has made comments the past few appointments about how healthy my hair looks. I've been using various L'Anza conditioners for several months and they've really made a positive difference. (Her salon doesn't sell L'Anza, so I have to order it elsewhere.)
I'd love to learn how to do a bun for times I just want it up and away, but I know my wife wouldn't like that at all. In fact, she told me some years ago that she wouldn't be seen with me if my hair was in a braid. She doesn't like me to wear it down either....but I guess I should just feel lucky that she accepts me with long hair.
I'll admit that I've had some thoughts of cutting it a little. Maybe doing something with the front so I can wear it down more easily. I see styles all the time that intrique me.
Hope all is well with everyone and their hair!

Mine doesn't seem to go much past tailbone length. I wouldn't mind if it did, but it just sits there.
I keep mine in a braid almost always. Every once and a while if I go out, I'll wear it down. But a braid is easier for tangles, heat, and non-headaches.
I tried a bun for the first time in a month and OUCH! I was dying by noon!

the bottom the my hair is reaching the small of my back at the moment. Mother's day weekend we had a carnival and parade here in our town, so we were outside, all day, for the first time this season. My hair got very dry very quickly. So I have returned to overnight oiling with jojoba oil. I did it a few times within the week afterwards, and it has helped greatly.
I have also switched to nature's gate conditioner. I use the aloe and the jojoba. I really love them. They have some sun screen properties to them also. Which is awesome, since the sun gets so darn hot here. (I am in eastern washington st and it is almost like a desert at times.)
I am still shooting for my tailbone. the rate it is going I am hopeing it will not take as long as I had thought. I went to a women's retreat with my church this last weekend. One of the other pastor's wife there had hair to the bottom of her bum. It was dark brown with a touch of auburn, and very thick and wavy. It actually remined me of my curl pattern. It was gorgeous! She was an older lady, ( for me, I am 30 )and she looke absolutly stunning. She totally inspired me, kind of re-lit the fire under my feet so to speak!
My hair seems to be doing pretty great! I mentioned in one of the other posts that it's been growing faster than ever these past few months. I started taking biotin and folic acid, I think that's what has made the most difference. I trimmed it about an inch last week to even up the ends a bit. It looks and feels alot better. It had reached about 2 inches past my tailbone before the trim! (haven't measured it since January)
Since starting my new job, I've been wearing my hair mostly in my signature 5-second updo with a hairstick (or 2). One of these days I'll try to put instructions on my site for it. Another 'do I throw in now and then is a faux knot (can't seem to get an actual knot to look right and stay tight enough). My hair is long enough now to have a decent amount of ponytail hanging down from the "knot". Looks pretty cool, I think. I also wear a ponytail fairly often, that seems to be the most popular style among the women in our office.
Mine is the longest hair in our office, by the way. There are 2 or 3 who have around mid-back hair. The rest are shoulder length or above. (there's about 20 women) So far I haven't gotten any comments about my hair. I have to bite my tongue sometimes when I hear discussions about haircuts and such though. But that's another story.....
For the summer, I usually wear a looped ponytail or my 5-second hairstick 'do, or 2 braids. I wear a bandana alot when I'm outside. It keeps the little hairs out of my face and off my neck, and it keeps my head cooler. (sometimes I wet the bandana if it's really hot and I'm going to be out for a while) It's been bad rainy here so far though, so the temps are staying down. It's usually 90 or 100 by now.
Long time, no post (for me). My hair is doing okay - it is pretty much the same length as it was last year around this time. I've been doing microtrims to get rid of my bad ends, so my ends are thickening up a bit despite the lack of length. I'm on a very simple routine of non-SLS, non-cone S&C (Giovanni) with a very small bit of oil every now and then. I'm only washing twice a week as well. I just started meds for hypo-thyroid (I guess being hypo can mess with your hair thickness and growth) so I'm hoping for better growth and thickness this coming year.

Hi specialkitty(waves).Glad to see you back over here.
Susan W- your hair is getting so long.It looks beautiful
My hair just past my shoulders. Its doing well, minus the last half inch.My hair got extremely dry from my very hard water. My scissors decided to eat my ends rather than cut them during a microtrim(never using those again). And my beautiful ficcare likes to bend my already fragile ends in half.
But I started using distilled water to wash with until I can afford a shower filter. It helps alot.I'm thinking my ends are a lost cause, not even extreme cones help. But I've decided to microtim them off.
I'm still growing. And have no intentions to cut.I was wearing a bun held by a ficcare, but quit due to damage. So now I'm back to ouchless ponytail holders for simple buns and basic ponytails.Which I'm not complaining. Its nice to have enough length to be able to pull back out of my face.

Hi Longhairdreams!! Your hair looks great - I honestly can't tell that the ends are bad or that there is damage....
It's too bad about the damage done in the ficcare bun.....I had no idea. I have trouble with almost everything causing damage, so there's not much I can do about it.

My hair is at 25 1/2, which is just at BSL for me. It has taken a lot of patience to get it that far and I attribute a lot of it to this board. I don't believe I ever would have gotten this far without reading everyone else's stories, advice, tips, etc.
My hair is very thick and heavy. I love pony tails and buns but they pull and give me a terrible headache. Anyone else have that? I also do a lot of low pony tails, braids, French braids, etc. How do these girls do the messy looking buns?
Hairbraider - That astounds me that no one has said anything about your hair!!! Well, maybe it doesn't astound me. They're probably just jealous. If I worked with you, I'd be telling you everyday how gorgeous your hair is!!! You know if you ever got it cut they'd be right there saying "AW!! Why did you cut it??? Your hair was so pretty!" That's happened to me several times. I'd get tired of my hair and I'd think, gee, no one ever comments on it, maybe it doesn't look nice. I'd get it cut and then everyone would say that!!! Well...I'm not falling for it this time! No sir!!! It's staying long! Cause I like it!
Hey Susan, I was checking out your hair pics and thinking "wow...soo long and pretty" when I realized we're pretty much hair twins! Same length, color, straight yet somehow frizzy, and my hair usually has braid waves too. that cracks me up, I never thought of my hair as awe inspiring, but I was definitely in awe of your hair. I need to get a picture somehow so I can show you, it's crazy - the only difference is I have long layers in my hair.
Oh, and my hair's doing good too. It's nice and healthy, but still kinda greasy since I'm adjusting to WO right now.
Jennifer's hair is at 34 1/2 inches now and it's about the bottom of her belt when she wears jeans. It's not growing very fast now at all. She wears her hair up a lot more than she did when it wasn't so long. She likes to wear it down, but it gets in her way and gets tangled so she wears it up. It's still down more than half the time though. The only way we have found to keep her itchy scalp problems down is to do nightly scratching of her scalp and very thorough cleansing of her scalp (wash and scritching with a comb) when we wash her hair. I wash her hair all the time for her. It's funny because she's always had long hair, but when she washes it herself for one reason or another, we have big troubles with flakes. I can't let her alone with a bottle of conditioner or it takes me a week to get her head back in good condition LOL! I have to put up a new picture of her hair soon. We're now doing CO about 75% of the time and when we do wash her hair, we do a conditioning without rinsing, diluted shampoo , rinse and follow with another conditioner, rinse and then a deep conditioner. Her hair is getting a bit thin at the ends. We may need to do a trim soon, but we'd like to wait until after summer.

I would really like to see a pic of Jennifer's hair, as soon as you get around to it.
Isn't it funny how measurements work? My hair is at 32 1/2 inches, but it just touches the top of the small of my back. I still have at least 6 inches before being at my jeans again.

I too have been a little surprised that nobody has said anything, negative or positive. Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad you won't fall for that trick again. Grow it for you.

Yes, it is funny how your body build dictates how hair of a certain length will look on you. Are you very tall? Jennifer is about 5'7" and most of her height is in her torso. Your post made me take a few new pictures of Jennifer over the weekend. I really like the look of her hair with the "beach look" where is isn't brushed out, but it feels much nicer brushed and silky. Here's a picture of her hair each way.

Thank You so much for sharing! Her hair is gorgeous! It looks sooo soft, and healthy! what shine.
I am also 5'7, with a very long torso, and waist. I have to wear talls in jeans, and two piece swim suites because I have such a long torso. It is very frustrating for me.
i dunno if nature's bounty hair, skin and nails vits is working, i'm using it close to a month already, i guess, i don't notice it... i've had long hair like lindsay l.'s but had to cut it from damage with straightening and i regret it.. i think my hair grows slow lately, i dunno i'm not so sure!

Yes, thank you tdouty for sharing new pics of Jennifer. Her hair has really grown. She has the kind of hair that looks many different colors depending on the light. That's cool.
I'm about 5'6", but I have long legs and a shorter torso. It's still a bummer Alisa, because it's very hard to find pants long enough (same with sleeve length). On me, 36 inches was exactly at the tip of my tailbone. I think to my waist was about 30 inches, if I remember right.
