I think I am going for micro rings, I was just wondering if anyone had anything to say good or bad about them, and if there were any long term users that found them damaging to their own hair.
I was originally trained in Eurolocs, and since then, I've used a variety of different rings. Overall, from what I have observed, if one is going to get damage from rings, in would be because a sloppy install ( traveling hairs in sections) or removal with the scary pointy pincher type tool. (shreads hair)
I LOVE the silicone lined micro rings. Even on my fine haired clients, I'm not seeing any breakage. I also like the protubes as well.
i am trained in Hairlocs, i use a few different tool for a safer install and removal.
care has to be taken with install and removal.
Thanks tangleRC, I am going for a consultation on monday for a woman who is certified with hair locs, she does then out of her house. She wouldnt really give me price over the phone which i can understand. I also talked to another woman who would charge me $250 for the install, she said I would need about 3 packs of hair at $45 per pack and another $40 for the rings. Does that sound about right? What do you find to be the going rate and what should someone charge to do it out of their home?
I think the majority would agree to the silicone lined microrings if any. I personally have not used them for an actuall install. The ones that ARE getting negative feedback are the ones with the 'screw'-like texture inside the link....damaged hair.
And find out about the quality of this hair that's $45 a pack. I would have a hard time taking her word as far as where it exactly came from. There could be a slight chance she could be one of those (I've heard about) that tell you it's Bohyme that they've cut from a weft and tipped themselves. But it's actually several strands of Bohyme, several strands of XYZ-crap hair. Just a heads up in case. Or she could be valid! I personally, would rather bring her my own hair I've purchased from a reputable place for her to install.

The only exception would be IF you know the stylist well and you know the quality of the hair that she sells.. Even if you trust the stylist and know the quality of the hair she has, I still personally would bring my own hair because I don't wish to pay the stylists markup on the hair.

If clients want to bring their own hair, I let them. But most of the time they have no idea what they are buying, and they bring in inferior beauty supply hair.
If a client provides her own hair from a source that I am unfamiliar with, I will have them sign a statement saying that I am not responsible if the hair turns to a tangled matted mess.
I buy the best quality the client can afford, and I never mark up the price of the hair. They pay what I pay for the hair, plus shipping.

My stylist won't do installs if the client brings in cheap hair.. If they bring in unfamiliar hair he will only install it if he knows and trusts the client..

You're a good stylist!!! and an honest business woman! Kudos to you!!! I see a LOT of stylists here in LALAland marking the hair up when they sell it to the client..

Thats what I thought, I mean with a new install plus maintenece for a year that would be $3400!!!! Im confused... it's hard to find an homest person these days.

O.K. you're going to learn to do this yourself. It's easy really you can even have your girlfriends or sisters do it. I wear fusion and my 16 just turned 17 years old last, week has been doing mine for a year.
With hair (depending on length and texture), technique (glue, links, shrinks or wefts) and iron, it's going to cost you $150-$200.

The install in my avatar was done with silicone-lined microrings and hair I pre-tipped myself. Your 1st install will take a few hours but it gets easier and with the microrings there is no heat, no glue, and the removal if you make a mistake is super easy!
shrinkies.net has got a large variety of microrings/shells/tubes to choose from as well as pliers for installation and removal. You will need clips and a comb for sectioning your hair. There are several sites that sell pre-tipped hair, you will need shoestring or I-tip hair as you may not want to pre-tip your own for your first install. There is a demo at yourhairshop.com - she also has some I-tip hair on sale.
Even easier for your 1st install would be wefts and some kind of tape, with prep work it should only take you a couple of hours and the results are great - you can definately get more hair on your head.

How do I go about doing all this? Where do I order, how much should I order...I would love to do this myself but I have no coordination skills at all.
First you have to settle on which technique you'd like to try first. I agree with Sarytyr, wefts with some tape will be the easiest also the quickest but any technique would be good.
I have a very small head so I am kind of nervous about doing wefts myself. I would like to try the rings as lond as they are plastic and not metal, I guess with those I would need pre bonded strands huh?
