I ran out of my sulphate free and used my old poo & conditioner. My hair was soft but fuzzy & frizzy. What a difference. I love the Giovanni Golden Wheat Shampoo (my hair is oily) & Smooth as silk conditioner.
I was wondering about that also and the importance of using sulfate free shampoos. They pretty much say you need to use that on extension hair to extend its life. I guess the sulfates over strip the hair and wash away too much natural oil or something along those lines.
The only thing though is when i have used sulfate free shampoos in the past, my hair tends to get really wayed down feeling and not totally clean. Not right away but after using the same kind for a few shampoos it starts to happen.
The hair I had installed last week is virgin unprocessed hair with the cuticle intact. I have only done a full shampoo once so far but used a moisturizing shampoo but it did contain sulfates. I gently lathered and rinsed very well. No problems. Im thinking I might try to find a really good sulfate free one and then alternate and maybe that will work better. As long as Im shampooing once a week anyway, maybe i can get by with sulfates? I dunno.
Any hair is going to fare better in the long run if you use sulphate-free 'poo & conditioner. You do not HAVE to, but it is best. Sulphates are, by nature, dying and really are a harsh chemical. Some shampoos and conditioners that have sulphates are very good- but eventually it will cause more drying of the hair and be more harsh than a non-sulphate product. You can rotate your shampoos and conditioners if you find them to be weighing down your hair. That usually happens form too many silicones in some of the conditioning products. They make your hair super shiny and soft, but it's good to rotate in another good shampoo once in a while to prevent build-up. Sulphate-free is especially important if you color you hair, to prevent fading of the haircolor. I noticed a HUGE difference with my red hair color (which fades easily anyway). When I used Pureology it hardly faded at all! It was great. When I switched to my old shampoo for a few days, which has sulphates, my haircolor stripped very quickly.
I see. I might try that Golden Wheat one and see how it goes. I dont color this extension hair but I do use semi perm colors on my natural hair about once a month or just when it starts to fade. I also use a couple shades darker than my natural color just to improve overall shine and the weird thing with semi permanent colors is they say about 30 days but if you are going darker, it seems to last much longer. I have heard red is the hardest color to maintain and it has something to do with its molecular structure?? Lord knows I was never very good at science hehe.
