QuoteReplyTopic: SoCap question! Posted: July 23 2007 at 10:41am
After reading the SoCap horror story now I am terrified to get extensions! I just have a couple of questions, being new to extensions and wanting to educate myself from everyone on the site before I go for my consultation. The only two fusion methods available where I live are Greatlengths and SoCap. I decided to go with SoCap because of the cold fusion and Keratin bonds. Here are my questions:
Does the price depend on the length of the extensions? Can the hair be bought long and then cut before installation or are the bond already attached to the hair? What is the average price? Is there anything I should ask at my consultation that will help me determine if this person is qualified? Does SoCap have a list of certified hairstyists? Once the hair is applied, are the extensions detectable..how is the naturall hair blended?
Sorry about all of the questions but I am so scared...My hair has been through a lot lately because of incompitent hairdressers. I had long hair (waist length) in March and now it is a short bob because of a horrible trim (yes! a trim). Thank you in advance for your help! Allyssa
Don't let the So Cap story scare you. Just do your homework before you get the extensions done. Most of these horror stories are due to the fact that there are many stylists who are incompetent out there doing extensions, just for the money and they don't give a hoot about customer service.
I would only go to a stylist who has worn (or better yet, is currently wearing) a full head of extensions. Those of us who wear them regularly are well versed in the various pit falls and why things can go wrong.
Anyway, ask to see before and after photos, and ask if you can talk to any clients who have been wearing her extensions for a while. It she says 'no', move on...
The price usually does depend on length, since longer hair costs more. With So cap, they do have their 'Rebonds' to take loose hair and bond it, but more likely the stylist will want to use the So cap hair, with the keratin already attached.
I'm sure if you go to www.socapusa.com and ask them for a referral, they will give you one in your area. This is the headquarters for the US division.
The price varies, but I think anywhere from $600-$1200 would be considered average price.
No type of extension is completely undetectable in the hair. A skilled stylist will apply the strands in a way that they can be disguised by your own hair. Also, the stylist should be able to blend the hair by razor cutting or point cutting.
A short bob is the most difficult hair style to 'cover up' with extensions. It's short and very blunt, it makes it hard to disguise that blunt line with extensions. You will most likely need a LOT of extensions to cover up the blunt line. Strand extensions are not the best choice for trying to extend a bob haircut, wefted extensions are a better choice. The wefts can more easily disguise the bluntness because the wefts are 'curtains' of hair rather then little pieces.
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the So. Cap. quality. The hair is beautiful and they do have great colors. I love the way the hair has a nice wave to it. My problem was purely stylist error.

I am getting it done today...will let you guys know how it goes! Does anyone know if you can color the hair? I was just wondering because I am not thrilled with my color (I can deal with it for a few months) but my stylist already ordered the hair. Also, how ong do they last? My hair grows quickly so I was wondering how much regrowth I can have before the extensions begin to look bad? Thanks again!!!
Keep us posted! Are they using flat bonds or rolled bonds? I have been thinking about taking the Socap training, but I'm having a hard time parting with the $1600 that they want for the class.
ANY extentions go about 3-4months. Depending on how well you take care of them, how well the stylist did and how well she does your maintence(moves them around etc)- yuor stylist should be moving the extentions around and taking them out /in (not all of them) when the regrowth starts on your hair etc and when its noticeable that they are goign to show- if she doesnt and only checks for knots and stuff shes only in it for the money!

Thanks everyone for your response! The stylist cancelled my appointment due to a family emergency so I rescheduled for Saturday. I am starting out slow and just getting the extensions on the sides of my hair to even it out and make it look longer. It is really choppy from a bad hair cut. I will keep everyone posted!

well..no go! They callled me to reschedule my appointment again telling me that they had a hard time with the delivery of the hair. The first time they lied and said the stylist had a family emergency. I decided to wait or go else where. I wish they would have told me the truth the first time...I hate it when people lie. Now I question the integrity of the salon. I went to a different salon for a consultation today and it was more expensive. They want $600 for partial so cap (on the sides and some in the back) and $1500 for a full head. What do you guys think of these prices?

Too much. That sounds more like Great Lengths prices. How much is this stylists charging you? Are you supposed to get a full head install from her?
Try Craigslist for extensionist in your area. Did you pay for you hair already? I'm sure you had to. When it comes in, pick it up and wait until you find someone else. I wouldn't trust them either. They may do good work but you have to decide if you trust them enough to do your hair and all of your maintenance.

I never knew about Craigslist! I just checked and no luck. I live in Syracuse New York (5 hours from NYC) upstate and there is not much of a demand or selection when it come to extensions. Obviously...the stylists can't even cut hair here! There are only three salons that offer socap and I went in for a consultation at two but I know that all three charge $1500 for a full head of long extensions. One salon quoted me $300 to blend the length on the sides of my head and the other $600 for the sides and some of the back. I just have chunks of hair missing from a horrible haircut. I want it blended to the same length that it is but I donlt want it so choppy that's why I decided on this type of extensions. I am not looking for lenght because eventually my hair will grow. It was down to the middle of my back before my nightmare began! I know that a few salons offer GL but I am not sure if I shoud go in for a consultation? I haved not paid for any hair yet and I am not sure what the stylists are charging but I can't imagine the hair costing that much. I don't need that much! Thanks again...Allyssa
My advice would be to keep looking and at least have a consultation with one of the Great Lengths stylists if that is all you can find. I am in an area also where So. Cap. is going for the same price as Great Lengths.
My second install with cut, color, hair, all totaled $1,550. I ONLY went for the second install because my boyfriend paid for most of it. This hair is not worth the price. If there is any way that you can fix your hair the DIY route, do it. I have found that most stylists that do So. Cap use 150 pieces for a full head. That is $350 wholesale for the hair.
They are making a killing on labor. I am not saying that some stylists are not worth it. As my experience has shown though, some are purely in it for the money. Seriously, I am tearing up even thinking of the hair nightmare I have had this summer.
For $1,500, you could almost any type of hair you want and install it yourself. Heck, you could have a couple years worth of hair!

Hi everyone! I was so upset yesterday but after talking to everyone here and my husband I feel better (thank you!) Anyways, I was decided to just go back to the first girl who gave me a price of less than $300. All I need is a few pieces on the sides to even out my hair until it grows 3", that's al I need. Once it evens out I think I will consider wefts for more length. I just don't think anyone here does wefts and I don't know who to ask. I think I will consider a traveling stylist. Would I have to pay for their traveling expenses? I am sure I woud but I thought I would ask? Thanks again, and I will llet you know how it goes! I just hope they don't cancel my appointment again once I make it. I guess I woulld feel better about the whole situation if the salon was upfront from the beginning instead of making up lies. I can put two and two together and figure it that they didn't have the hair the first time they cancelled my appointment. It would have been better if they just told me that instead of saying "the stylist had a family emergency".

So Cap for me was less than $700's total - $100 per hour to put in and the rest of it was hair charge and supplies(brush, conditioning, styling it etc)
