New Jersey Police Pressure Swizz Beatz Over 'It's Me Snitches'
The Camden, New Jersey Police Department are calling for producer/rapper Swizz Beatz to denounce anti-snitching sentiments police believe he promotes in his hit single, "It's Me Snitches," or they plan to pull sponsorship for an event he will participate in called the "Peace On The Streets" rally.
According to Associated Press, police feel that lyrics from the single such as "Freeze, you know who it is / It's me, snitches" and "I ain't gonna shoot ya / I could just choke ya" advocate violence and anti-snitching -- a concern the city's police feel helps silence potential informants in on of the nation's most notorious cities.
Swizz Beatz, however, has an explanation, and says he would have never agreed to participate in the event if that's what his intentions were in his lyrics. "The use of the word 'snitches' in the song was just an edit for radio," Swizz told the AP in a statement. "If I supported violence or the 'Stop Snitching' campaign, I wouldn't have agreed to be a p art of the event ..."
