I have been coloring my own hair off and on for awhile. I have been told to try the Redken EQ shades as it would be much healthier on my hair. So I have been reading and trying to learn a little about it. Anyway, my natural hair color is a medium brown. Right now, it is a medium brown with alot of highlights that are copper/orange. My goal in the end is a shiny light to medium brown, with natural looking highlights that are not so bold. Like my last trip to the salon I loved the dark color, but the highlights were so light compared the the base color you could almost mistake the highlights for grey.
Anyway, when picking an EQ color, I am thinking I don't want something that adds gold tones or copper, but I want to even it out and take some of that away. I was thinking 04nb which is maple, which I am told is a medium neutral brown or 05n walnut which I am told controls warmth.
Anyway, I don't pretend to be a stylist, and I take very good care of my hair. I actually enjoy doing my own hair, but I would like to find a color I can just stay with. Any suggestions to get me in the right direction would be appreciated.

hi, i use shades eq....i even have the education book and the formula book.....the 5n sounds pretty smart choice on your part....it does really deposit darker if you don't cut it with some of the clear...like they recommend using 1/2 oz color 1 1/2 oz clear and equal amount developer....depends on if you want a lighter deposit or a stronger one....using 1/2 oz eq color and 1/2 oz developer is going to give you a deep deposit of color.....i know i had it take about 2-3 shades darker on my hair when i first started using shades.

Please keep in mind, on the second one, I would want some highlights like in the first one.
My hair now, is lighter then both of those. A lighter brown with orange tones to it I definately want gone. Its not a strong orange by all means, just too golden for me. There are too many highlights, and I want alot fewer highlights like in the first photo. Now again, I heard redken products are the best on your hair and I can get them. Any suggestions on what colors to get??

ok, i matched the color swatch on the 2nd pic to my shades eq color chart and it comes out in the shades eq as toffee---06gb...it has gold in it but i don't think it will pull red....my experience is that you must cut this unless you want a dark deposit....cut with the 000 crystal clear or with a 09 series....i put full strength on and let me tell ya.....hope this helps.

ok, the base on the first pic is 4nb...maple brown....i looked in the book and for a moderate deposit....you probably ought to go with that or end up looking goth.....it is 1 oz shades color, 1 oz crystal clear and 2 oz of developer.....of course you can make more or less depending on lenght of hair, just keep proportions right.....i am going to be looking forward to hearing of what you think of the shades....i love them....it is so gentle, 2% peroxide and the shine and the colors are really beautiful....where i went wrong the first couple of times i used it was i used just straight color and developer....didn't know any better until i received my education book....oh ya, on that first pic-it was kinda hard to match the base because there are so many different colors going on.....but pretty sure i got it right. i know i did on the second one. good luck!!

oh hey, the maple will impart warm tones to your hair...don't know if you want that or not. the other color is a neutral so i think that would be alot better. let me know if you have anymore questions. did you get your color off the internet?
