I have a question. Why do soooo many hair extension artists only take cash or checks?

Most of the ones I have seen for consults only will take cash or checks even though many of them own the whole salon, or work in a reputable salon. I have my own business and don't find it any problem to take credit cards. I always get paid either way. I have met with a few of the extension experts who post here on this site and they only take cash or checks but it is in conflict to the advice they give. Most of the posters say don't go anywhere where they won't take a credit card.

Please advise....I thought if you were reputable and did a good job, you would have no problem taking credit cards.

Hi

I take Cards in my salon, i find a lot of people look for extension salons with card facilities as it is a big purchase and some people finance their hair on their credit card.

Maybe some salons dont offer the facilities because of the charges incurred on each transaction, some merchant accounts carry a fee of upto 3% of the transaction amount, if salons are charging £500-£1000 for a head of hair that equates to quite a hefty charge.

Also it may have something to do with the fact a customer can quite easily do a chargeback on their card if not happy with the service, resulting in the salon loosing a lot of money (not that this should ever happen with a reputable salon).

xx

I do take credit and debit card because I find it's necessary when doing higher ticket services.  But many stylists don't want to pay the merchant fees for processing credit cards and also you either have to lease or pay for the actual terminal.

My fee I pay to take cards runs between $100-250 per month, depending on how much money I run through it.  My terminal cost $600 to buy.  See, these are the overhead costs a salon must figure in when they determine the pricing of their services.

i agree with you as always, metalgirl! My fees are very high in salon too. I take credit cards, however i prefer checks or cash. We are charged between 5-6% on each transaction in salon, and i dont like to tag that onto clients tab so i eat it.
i go where ever to do business whether or not they take credit cards. It really doesnt matter to me one way or the other. I  myself pay for most things with cash or checks, as i always have.

I would rather not point out names. I am sure each person has their own reason for how they take payment. I was just curious because I noticed that a lot of the people who posted on the boards about crappy service paid by cash and had a harder time getting resolution. I hope I haven't offended anyone. I was just curious. I personally don't have a problem as long as I get a receipt but I prefer to pay by credit card always. Also I didn't know that salons tack on extra fees on top of the credit card companies since I only pay visa/mc 1.5% and Amex costs 3% (so I don't take amex).  I have found in my business (retail services) that my sales have doubled since taking credit cards and I as a business owner feel more secure since I get the money right away rather than having to wait for someones check to clear. Maybe there is a difference in location too.

no offense taken at all.
fees depend on alot of things. Volume of use, credit rating and also company that is hosting the cc machine, also if you own the machine or lease it. It all adds up. And yes location could play a part in it too-
