How fast does your hair grow?
And if you are growing your hair longer, and if you have a goal... have you thought about when you'll reach it?
When I was growing out my hair, it grew at the average rate of 6 inches per year. And after awhile, I did start to estimate how long it would be until I reached certain lengths (like waist length, or "classic" length). I also determined how often I had my hair trimmed, and how much (the hairstylists were excellent at trimming just the tips). So, my estimates on achieving my goals were virtually spot on.

you know dave i'm not sure how fast my hair grows. i started out wanting my hair like jenifer anistion. not the 1st season. but when she had her hair long with layers. this was back in 98. i got that style but i have bangs. then i saw the movie ''striptease'' and i fell in love with demi moore's hair. i was getting tired of my layers. demi had it long one length with bangs. so since 98 i've been growing out my layers and length. i had to at times cut more of my hair to even it out. my hair is now about to my waist. i was very pleased with the pictures we took at christmas. to me it looks like demi moore's did. i still want it t keep growing maybe 3 more inches but with me who knows. as it gets longer the more i like it. i like seeing a long ponytail when i put it up.
Here is the bizarre thing. I decided that my hair had completely stopped growing. So I stopped worrying about it. Then just this week three different people that I had not seen for awhile made a big deal about how "long my hair was growing". HUH? YIPES. I must have Hair-Anorexia like Jen B said. LOL.
Then tonight I was at a business dinner. I had my hair down and three women walked by. They were mumbling and looking my direction. Of course I got paranoid because I am just a paranoid chick..hee hee. Then one of them came over and said "we were wondering how long it took you to grow your hair to your thighs?" To my thighs? HUH? I thought it was just to the bottom of my rear. I went into the bathroom and looked and sure enough it was brushing the very tip top of my thighs. WooHoo. I was in shock.
Geez, I have no idea when that happened. I guess it is really true...a watched pot never boils...or something like that. Now I guess I have to keep taking my Viviscal and Hairtopia and doing my religious dusting trims because something must be working??? And yes, I am so used to having long hair, it seems like it isn't all that long.
So what was the question anyway?

Bizarre or not, Karen, I just thought I'd say "woo hoo" to your growth...and long may it continue (pun intended). FWIW, I think my hair has maybe overcome previous stalling too. :o) Chris
Thank you for the WooHoo and I am soooo glad to hear that your hair is out of its dormant phase. :-) The other thing I noticed is that after months of "acting up" my hair feels soft and silky. So that is another cool surprise. :-)
So good to see you here. Have a great weekend. Karen

I'd say close to an inch a month.. it might average out, since I starting measuring a few months ago...
I'll second Karen on the "a watched pot never boils" phenomenon. When I was keeping my hair short, I used to complain every time I got my hair cut, 'cause it seemed like it grew once it got cut and I needed another trim. Now that I'm committed on growing my hair past my shoulders, it's taking forever for my front shorter layers to grow out!
20 inches of hair should reach my mid-back.. I'm not really wondering how long it's going to take.. I'm just waiting until my layers grow out, and then I'll let my hair grow as it naturally does..
The good news is that summer is almost here and as someone else posted, the Vitamin D of sunshine helps hair grow faster. Also, I found that when I eat Nori seaweed my hair feels fuller and stronger. So eating some good foods will always help a little.
At least you know you have all of us here pulling for your and your follicles to grow, grow, grow. :-)
Best wishes, Karen

Congrats on the recent hair growth, Karen! Keep those eyes off that boiling pot.
And congrats too to Beatnik Guy on getting past the stalling and back into gear.
One inch per month is amazingly fast, papillon_purple! I used to know someone whose hair grew that fast. Endured a 1 foot "trim" and all returned a year later. Just amazing.

Let me add my hearty congratulations too Karen. EXCELLENT!! You obviously take extraordinary care of your hair and I'm glad your hard work is paying off. My wife has mid-thigh hair so I know a little bit about the commitment and care it takes to grow it long. Good for you!! You are an inspiration.
As for the original question, my text books say that hair normally grows at half a millimeter or so per day, or about half an inch every month. So if Papillon_purple is getting an inch a month that is really very good. On the other hand, I have a good friend that takes Viviscal and her hair does indeed grow more than half an inch a month so an inch isn't out of the question.
By the way Karen, I was messing about on the Internet last night and, just for grins, typed in "hair" in Google AND YOU CAME UP FIRST!! But then, WE always knew you were number one. You rock girl!!

My hair grows about an inch every 5 weeks. Out of plain curiosity to see which time of my menstrual cycle my hair grows fastest, I have taken to measuring it weekly. It stalls for about 2 weeks after my period, then speeds up till my next period. I can't really attribute it to anything other than family history. My dad is almost 61 and has his hair thinned when he goes to the barber.
Not long ago, I got my first professional trim in 12 years. The shape is holding remarkably well, and my ends look just fine. I figure, with my short term goal being to my fingertips, which is about 48" from my hairline, it will reach this goal by at least thanksgiving if I don't get a trim. Then, I guess it could be to my knees (about 54") about a year or so from now, or roughly 11 inches longer. That is, if it continues to grow. :)
My hair is almost to my knees (~50") and continues to grow longer. Rather slowly these days, but that's ok - it's still *growing*.
Thank you for your insight about your hair growth. I found it very helpful.
To Budokan,
You are so sweet. Thank you for your kind words & for checking us out on Google. We are very honored for that distinction.
To Dave,
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend in your plaid pants.
To everyone else (Princess, Uzma, Beatnik, et all) hope you are having a fabulous weekend. It is hotter than Hades in Dallas today and it is ONLY May. UGH. Heaven help us.
Best wishes & ((((()))))s to all. Karen

karen i saw your picture on a website i can't remember the name though. it was were you had a lot of hair stixs in your hair. you are very pretty i'm glad to see you have bangs too. if i didn't have bangs my hair would fall in my face. i live in san diego and our weather you never know in spring. in the beginning the week the weather was warm. today it's a little cold with some rain. wow i feel like a weather girl LOL
44 cm in 34 months..... roughly over 1.2cm per month. (I started from almost nothing, beginning 2000.7, and made my choice to tell the world to (6th letter expletive) itself with their damn conformism later that month)
If I ever and I mean EVER have the ends trimmed, I wouldn't trust anyone but regulars of the HB.lhs forum. Still, don't delude yourself, that won't be for a long time.
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.
So here is the Dave "plaid trousers" story......he will probably kill me...maybe not...but here it is...
Dave is a huge fan of golf. He plays golf a lot. One time when we were talking on the phone he mentioned that he had just played golf. I asked him if he wore the "traditional plaid pants" trousers to you Brits...and he laughed and said that the plaid "Johnny Miller golf outfits" were long gone.
Anyway, I still tease Dave about the plaid pants...er trousers....from time to time. :-)
Hope that clears up the mystery.
Best wishes, Karen

I don't know you very well but I love your icon. I just added one myself and went through about 5 before I found one I liked. I really love LiliBeach's icon but I couldn't find one as cool as yours or LB's.
Hi Princess,
Thanks for the compliment. I believe the photo is here at HB.com. There is one with my hair in hairsticks. I personally HATE having my photo taken but endure it from time to time.
Yes...I have bangs. I would die w/out bangs. It is my "cover" from the world. :-)
Uzma,
Glad to hear you are having a good weekend. I, of course, am working at HB.com. I have been fighting all day with a digital camera and the scanners to try and get some new hair accessories in the Marketplace. They are these squirmy little France Luxe headbands w/cutouts and they pop off the display just as I am ready to click. UGH. I think the scanner is winning. :-)
Best wishes, Karen

There is rarely a weekend goes past without Dave playing golf. I'm sure he has a 'golf outfit' of sorts too, whatever he says... :o)
