QuoteReplyTopic: Am I spending too much? help! Posted: June 02 2008 at 10:59pm
I went to my consult at cybermane Sunday, and was originally looking at shrink links, and was quoted at $2200 then $1200 every 3 months for maintenence! There is no way that I can afford that!
I needed another option, and she suggested her flat wefts, they're basically done with shrink links or microbeads, and she said that that would give me the look I wanted for $500, and $400 every 3 months for maintenence. That is WITHOUT the cost of hair, which I ordered myself (Bohyme). I made an appt to get this done on the 11th.
So my question is, am I spending too much?? Is it worth the money to learn the placement and grow my hair out in a damage free way? She seemed to really know her stuff...but this seems like ALOT. Opinions? HELP!
Yikes. To me that sounds VERY high but Cybermane is also supposed to be excellent. She has a great website and seems skilled in many different extension attachment methods so I’m not sure. Can you talk to any of her past/present clients to find out if they are satisfied with her services? All I can tell you is it seems awful high for a fancy sew in. I might be wrong about that however. I have a basic sew in. Maybe I would flip out over her “flat” technique.

Again, maybe it's worth just seeing her placement and having her blend the extensions for the first time...since I'm completely new to this...IDK! I don't want to cancel this appt and then do a terrible DIY and then ruin the hair, but I also don't want to lose money for no reason!

I know Charlene personally and she is one of the most knowledgeable hair extensions experts there is. When she came out to California we got together and we shared our hair extension 'secrets'. She taught me how to do pinch braids too so I wouldn't have to spend money on taking the Hair Police class.
She also taught me about her flat track method and I do that for some of my clients. It is a more affordable way to get some hair on your head.
She is in NYC, so naturally prices are more there compared to other areas. But you get what you pay for generally and I would not hestitate to recommend Charlene's hair extension services.
Yeah, I think it would probably be worth it the FIRST time just to get it done right and have it look fantastic. Watch her really well (heard she is great). If you can get a feel for what she's doing, you could try on your own next time or do you own maintenance. There are plenty of girls here who do their own individual installs; you CAN do it!
Love clip-ins and tape!

I think that I am going to go for it...I think if I attempt a DIY the first time I'll be paranoid I did something wrong and always regret cancelling this appt.
metalgirl- where in california are you? i am planning on moving to LA within the year, so if I love this method, maybe you could do my maintenence? Also...if I am looking to save money, do you think the flat weft is something I would be able to recreate myself? Or is it very complicated?
I live near Sacramento, CA and that is about 6-7 hours drive from Los Angeles.
While there are many talented ladies here that do their own hair extensions, I can't advocate it in most cases, with the exception of taped in wefts. I feel to do a good damage free job, you need to be able do adequately see what you doing and use the proper hand positions to get proper placement, which is very difficult for one to do to one's own head.
Many people do manage to do their own hair extensions, but proceed with caution.
Wow, I was actually thinking of going to her, even though it's very out of my way. Did the subject of micropoint links/cyberhair come up at all? I emailed them asking if I could get cyberhair for around $1000, and she said her junior technician could do it, but now I don't know if that's believable. It should definitely cost more than any of the other extensions.
She may have a good reputation, but I think that's ridiculous, to be perfectly honest with you. I remember that her consultations are something like $100/hour as well. How long did yours last?
I have to say that Charlene at Cybermane is great. She knows everything about every hair extension method out there and is extremely careful about preserving your own hair. I only wish I lived closer to her place (I live on the west coast). I would say, you get what you pay for....with extensions, its really important you go to someone who is good at what they do (install, maintenance, and removal) especially if you are going for individuals....if you want wefts, you can find a good sewin person or you can try tapes/wefts yourself. If you want flat tracs....basically siicone topped wefts that are attached to your hair with locs you can go to others but I would always choose someone who has a great reputation for preserving YOUR hair over a cheaper less experienced person....at least for the first few times until you know what you are getting into.
by the way....I tried the cyberhair ......its pretty cool and feels 100% lighter in your hair than hairlocs but my only issue was that the locs started to show (they are copper) even though the locs are covered with hair...and I have dark hair. But they are great for super thin, delicate hair as they don't put any weight on your own hair. There is someone here on the west coast who is certified in that method and she does a great job.
You probably don't realize it but you have two of the most professional, experienced hair extensions artists in Calif. answering your post. I would listen to what each has to say.
I have to agree, generally you do get what you pay for with extensions.
Best of luck to you on your road to having a good hair day everyday!
Yea, I originally wanted cyberhair...But I think I would have ended up spending about 2500-3000, considering shrink links would have been 2200. BEFORE the 1200 every 3 months for maintenence.
I did feel the cyberhair and Charlene definitely thinks it's the best...and if I didn't have a budget I would have gone with it in a second! Unfortunately, that's just not my price range...
I am going to go to her for my install next Wednesday. I don't think I'm ready to do it myself, and at the very least I can see her placement, method, etc. Maybe I will love it so much I'll cough up the $400 every 3 months for maintenence...who knows. What i DO know is that after hearing all of these great things, and meeting her, I really do trust that she knows her stuff and my hair will look beautiful. You DO get what you pay for, so hopefully I have the most fabulous wefts on the planet!
Any idea if the cost of maintenance on the cyberhair is very high? Like the shrink links was? I know you're supposed to go in every 8-12 weeks for them.

Hi TanglesRC. I am about an hour from you. I need my extensions to be done the sooner the better. I have dark, sort of coarser hair. What would be the best way to go? I understand you sell your own hair at the shop, right? tia
i do not sell my hair, i have my hair custom made to my specs so i always have hair ready to install. i carry over 15 colors and different textures as well.
call me so we can set up a consultation.
cross- charlene is the best in the east coast by far. She is also a very good friend of mine and i would trust her with my hair, and for me that says alot....
