Topic: My hair got cut to short Posted: January 11 2000 at 6:56pm
Can someone please give me any ideas on how to get my hair to grow back fast? I am 22 and my hair was down past my bumm. I loved it and so did everyone else except my mother. Now I do not live with her and I have not for over six years but last sunday I went to visit her and she wanted me to have my hair cut. I did not mind having my split ends cut my hair would still be long enough to sit on. Anyway to make a long story short it ended up being cut to the middle of my back. I have never been so upset in my life. Can someone please tell me how to get my hair to grow faster and how long do you think it will take to get back where it was? Please help i have been crying for days and I am sure my husband wants me comitted.Thank you and sorry for the long read,Amy

Hi Amy,First of all, how did you get so much hair cut off if you didn`t want it? Did you go to a stylist or did your mom cut it? I sincerely don`t wish to sound mean, but it seems rather obvious to me that if your mom did not like your hair and offered to give you a "trim," that the little "trim" would probably be quite substantial! If that is the case, I think you need to accept a little bit of the responsibility of playing into her hands. If you went to a stylist, was he your regular stylist? If so, then you need to shop for a new one!I know a little bit of how you feel. I recently went from long to short and I *hate* it. You have two choices: 1) Be miserable and stressful which actually may inhibit your growth or 2) chalk it up as a learning experience and do everything you can to enhance its growth.I have been measuring my hair meticulously, and in the last 12 weeks, it has grown 1 5/8", and that is with *two* trims!! Even though your obvious goal is growth, one thing you should not ignore is trims. Once a split end has started, it cannot "fuse" back together, and most likely it will keep splitting, causing damage to the hair. Best to get them trimmed before the split moves too far up the hair shaft.However...you need to do some serious shopping for a stylist whom you can trust. It`s important he (I use a singular pronoun to mean both he and she) understand your goal. I am no expert at all, but I`ve been told that when the goal is growth, a trim should be every 8-10 weeks, depending on many factors. And if you can stress that you`ll be a regular customer *if* the stylist trims just 1/8 to 1/4" at each trim, then I think you`ll have healthy hair while it has maximum chance of growth. If your hair was down to your rear, then you obviously have the genetics to grow it that long again. Hair grows approximately 6" a year so with trims, that`s probably a gain of 5" a year. Depending on how much was cut, I`d say a rough guess is that it will take 1-2 years for your hair to regain its length. Not to make light of your feelings, but at least you still have long hair! And my guess is that your ends are wonderfully thick and healthy. And that is the good news. :-)

Amy, I think this was a really ugly event caused probably by your mother. As already mentioned hair usually grows about 6 inches a year, but the growing rate can be different up to 12 inches but also slower. I heard from Diane (I guess long hair support or hair politics) that vitamins helped her to regrow her hair after an hairdressing accident, she also gave a precise description what she used. It is sad that your mother can not accept you with your own likings, I know this very well from my own family experiences. I always liked long hair and tried to get it for me and at your age it was between shoulder and midback length, no great hair, but I loved it. Family always argued against my hair and sometimes they reached their goal and I hated myself and the others for that. I never had succcess to convince them from the opposite, even at age 70 they still argue against my hair if they will see me. I never would allow my mother or father to perform a trim, I am sure they will ask for it during my next visit (I am male). Sometimes it is not possible to change the parents opinion how their child has to be. I am hopefully that your hair will reach its length again and it will give you all the joy that long hair for long hair lovers can give.

Ever heard of Nioxin, I use it all of the time. There is a Nioxin starter kit you can buy. It contains 3 products Cleanser, Scalp therapy and bionutrient treatment. Using these 3 products on a regular basis can cause hair ti grow up to a third faster. I win`t explain how it works here. But it does work. Within the pack there should be an instruction leaflet which explains how it works. The products are usually used on people with skin/scalp disorders. I have neither but I do have hair that touches my waste and I`m a guy.
