I use the wide toothed comb when doing guys hi lights. Its easier and gives best results. The shoe shine technique can be tricky to do yourself.
Using the comb gives better coverage, but decide first how much you are wanting, and use the comb at random sections at the top of the head. Can I also just say, guy's hair is harder to hi light as it is more coarse, can take a little longer to develop. You may also want to use an ash toner to avoid the canary yellow look.:]

If it were me, I'd avoid that technique, it's looks to unpredictable, especially if you aren't experienced. Try a streaking cap. Use tiny strands. Be careful to not glob the bleach on the cap, because if bleach gets pushed through, the appearance is blotchy. Strand test to determine timing and color.
Using the comb seems like it would work well. Even using your (gloved) fingers to streak some of the glop around on your hair would work.

I'm a kitchen beautician, not a licensed cosmetologist, so please take any advice I give with a grain of salt!
I am a guy (don't see many on here). I bleached all my hair for fun last year and still have some unopened bleach left. When I cut off the bleached hair, a few strands were still blond and created a very natural looking highlight. I figure I might as well use whats left and try to highlight my hair which is now completely dark brown. I find a lot of guides on how to do it for women, but nothing that talks about men's hair.
Someone told me it might be a good idea to put some on a wide toothed comb and comb it through my hair. Are there any other techniques that don't require any extra supplies? I want it to look natural or at least not wacky. Any tips? Here is a pic for reference, but right now my hair is a little shorter than in this pic.
