QuoteReplyTopic: BRAZILIAN KERATIN TREATMENT OR BKT Posted: August 24 2010 at 1:18am
hi,
I had the Beox Brazilian Keratin done in May. I was talked into it by my stylist. I had somewhat damaged ends, and she said that was fine. After 3wks (and yes, I followed all the shampooing rules and used the products given to me), the kink was back full force, and the ends were breaking off in 2-3inch pieces! I also had horrible burning of my eyes during the treatment, and a cough that last the first night. My hair smelled like burned rubber.
I have researche what went wrong, and found that the experience of the stylist is paramount. She had just started this.. the 450deg flat iron recommendation by the vendor is not set in stone, as I understand. My hair was probably damaged by the stylist vs. the product. That said, I wouldn't do it ever due to the toxicity.
Beware of any product that says "formaldehyde free". Look at the MSDS form- ANY -aldehyde is the same type of chemical as formaldehyde. I am in the scientific field, and I am familiar with these chemicals. I went forth because I thought the % was low enough to not cause irritation. I was wrong.
I was in Japan for three years. I missed my hair dresser the most. I had to deal with a language barrier and the fact that Japanese hair dressers tend to do it their own way. The result was that I did it myself at home.
Ladies!! What are you using on your roots in between BKT treatments? I have very curly coarse hair that grows super fast. My BKT lasts about 2.5 months but in between my roots grow out curly. So I'm walking around with board straight hair and curly roots, lol. I don't use relaxers but if there's anyone out there that has any advice I would love to hear it. Thanks!!

When you go to this website, email them and ask for a price list. Be prepared, because they will ask for your cosmotologist license number.
Buy the 4Hair Brazilian Keratin Treatment Straightening and Volume reducer ( Residue Extractor Shampoo 1 & Treatment 2 ) with the red label shown here:
They sell a 4 oz. sample kit which comes with enough for 2 treatments for $45.00. They will send an instruction DVD if you ask for it. You will also need to buy the maintenance shampoo ($10.00 for 6.5 oz.). Use any conditioner without Sodium Chloride so check the ingredients.
I recommend having it done professionally first. It's expensive but consider it a learning experience. Go ahead and ask the stylist exactly what they are doing and take notes.

I checked out the link and this salon says that both products are FDA approved. I don;t think that is accurate. I went to Marcia's website and under testinmonials it said that "does not require pre-market safety testing, review, or approval for any cosmetics, including hair straightening products".

Marcia Texiera-I found fair results-lasted 2 months at best
I went twice to a salon (Lasio Studios) that sold their own brazilian brand-a one day hair wash (fair to poor results) and a 4 day (fair-good results)
The last brazilian was 6 weeks ago, and I think it is fabulous-except for my allergy. It is Rejuvenol with Collagen and Booster (probably more formeldahyde. So far my hair is straight, thick and never frizzes. I really love this product, however I seem to be allergic when initially applied. I washed my hair after 2.5 days and my hair is still tame and frizzless.
My hair thanks you for sharing your thoughts,
NYC girl

I heard Marcia Texiera BKT is the best and most consistent. Which BKT did you use Livluv when you did the treatment yourself at home?
This salon offers Marcia Texiera and 4Hair and charges more for the 4Hair treatment! This means 4Hair is better than Marcia Texiera? I hope so. 4Hair is what I've been using. Read what they say about Marcia Texiera & 4Hair:
I used 4-Hair. Thanks for the tip on Marcia Texiera. I may try it if they sell a sample size.
Just did a search and found another BKT that doesn't make you wait called "Brazilian Blowout." The stylist offered Global Keratin, Coppola and Brazilian Blowout, and she said she liked Brazilian Blowout the best. My stylist offered Coppola and 4Hair, and liked 4Hair the best.
I just cut my hair, and getting a good cut makes a big difference in the condition of your hair and how easy it is to blow dry.
I'm going to stick with 4-Hair because I'm spoiled not having to wait to shampoo my hair. I wish I knew more people who have tried the "no wait" BKTs and can compare them to the regular BKTs. I might just try a regular BKT like Marcia Texiera so I can judge the difference. 4-Hair is going to be hard to beat.

First, I finally ordered DermOrganics, tried it a couple times, and I don't like it. I love 4Hair shampoo and conditioner, and I'm gonna stick with it. I also love Goldwell Color Foam.
4Hair is a great product, makes hair super shiny and silky. Being able to wash it out of your hair right away should solve your allergic problem. Have it done professionally, and it should last 2 1/2 months. That's how long it lasted for me.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I keep reading BKT blogs hoping to find the best BKT product. None of them seem to stand out from the rest. Have you heard anything special about Marcia Texiera BKT? Also, did you notice any difference in any of your BKTs? Were any of them better? Keep in touch.

LivLuv, you're a wealth of information. I have done BKT sporadically about 4 times. I've used various products, lastly the Rejuvenol Booster with Collagen and it worked fabulously. The only problem is that I am highly allergic (probably to the formaldahyde). After about 24 hours, my scalp itches and the product burns my scalp terribly. Have you used the 4Hair product and does it stay in your hair for more than a month?
Your description of your hair fits mine, except my hair is still curly--especially at the root. I am desperate to continue my BKT, but I am afraid for my health. I am hoping the same day washing will sove my problem. Please elaborate on your experience, if you can. I will also try the Derm Organic shampoo you posted.
Thanks all for sharing your experiences.

Most all shampoo contains sodium chloride, a thickening agent. After BKT you cannot use any product that contains sodium chloride, because it will remove the Keratin from your hair, ruining your BKT. I love the shampoo & conditioner that came with my BKT, and it even cured the mild scalp psoriasis I had. The only drawback was the price, so my stylist kept trying different BKT shampoos but never found one better than the one I love. Well, she recently discovered a shampoo and conditioner that is so wonderful she advertises the product on her website. Here's what they're saying about it:
Derm Organic Shampoo & Masque: What celebrities are talking about Derm Organic natural hair care products? Selma Hayek to Tyra Banks! It is amazing for all hair types and works wonders for thick or coarse hair. The argan oil is loaded with omegas for a one of a kind nourishment and cuticle enhancer that gets the cuticle to lay flat preventing moisture from escaping from the hair!
Cut drying time by over 35% and prevent damage from chemicals used during the perming, straightening and coloring process. WE LOVE DERM ORGANICS! They are on fire and sure to be the next big
thing in hair care!
Derm Organic Sulfate-Free Conditioning Shampoo with Argan Oil offers a healthy lather that makes other sulfate-free shampoos jealous! Made with mild lipid and amino-acid cleansing creams, it’s so healthy for your hair that you’ll never have to switch shampoos again.
What makes it so good? Because the human hair fiber is made from amino acids, and the hair and skin’s moisture is derived from lipids, our proprietary blend of lipid and amino-acid based cleansers make DermOrganic the only shampoo that moisturizes, strengthens and rebuilds the hair while it cleans!
So gentle, this shampoo is ideal for color treated hair and is superb as an all-over cleanser that leaves skin soft and supple. Great for Afro American hair. Further enriched with Omega-6 and anti-oxidants to protect and preserve the life of hair color.
Features:
Made with natural Moroccan Argan Oil
Gentle sulfate-free formula ( no sodium chloride )
Color-Safe formula
Revitalizes damaged hair
Restores shine and softness
Enriched with omega-6, antioxidants, essential lipids and vitamin E
Conditions with vitamins and rice amino acids
Luxuriously gentle cleansing for hair and skin
Colored, permed, heat styled or sun drenched, DermOrganic has what it takes to impress your stressed tresses. We’ve also added rice amino acids to help repair, and reinforce; panthenol to rehydrate; and natural moisture factors to further maintain a healthful moisture balance.
DermOrganic is very reasonably priced at 12 oz. for $12.95.
I wonder, have you noticed losing less hair? Before the BKT I lost lots of hair in my brush and in the drain. After the BKT I lose only a couple hairs here and there.
Another nice thing about the BKT is using the Shampoo & Conditioner. I think I must have had an allergy to Sodium Chloride because before the BKT my scalp itched, even the first day of shampooing. After the BKT my scalp doesn't itch after washing, and I think it must be using shampoo without the Sodium Chloride.
Please keep us up to date on your BKT experience. It's hard to find a place to get the BKT done and there aren't many blogs talking about it.

I finally got my BKT. The salon I went to used the Rejuvenol keratin. It took 3 hours. My hair is very full and frizzy. After the 4 day wait period, I washed with the shampoo and conditioner the salon gave me. My hair felt soft in the shower. I was not straight after it dried, but very soft. It was less bulky and looked nice, not the straight I wanted. So, the big test. Was my styling time going to be cut in half? Yes it was it straightened in like 15 minutes with the blow dryer and just a few times with a flat iron. I'm on day 3 of leaving it straight and it still straight and soft. I have dry hair so I don't need to wash often.
Liv explained that I can go ahead and wash as needed. So long as I used the recommended shamp/cond that this will fade out in the time it will fade out that waiting to wash wont make the difference, so thats good to know. Thanks LivLuv:)
I will save now to get the escovaprogress to do this myself in 3 months. I am learning all I can and judging by Livs success with her home treatment I feel confident I should be able to do mine successfully:)
LivLuv, thank you for getting me through the hard days of waiting. I'm so glad I had this done. I can't wait to see how my home treatment turns out, but don't want the months to pass too quickly. I paid 330 for this treatment and want it to last:)
Sincerely,
Rainseed
HomeSweetHome where do you live? I just put in Brazilian Keratin treatment and my city and state and started my research. I also called every salon I could in my area. I was surprised how many salons are not familiar with the treatment. Then I found amys salon services and got it done:)
