Although my hair is currently short, I read a thread in HairTalk where someone stated that a large number of women have medium length hair. Can't remember which thread, but I have thought about that comment and wanted to post my thoughts. Would also like to hear what you think as well.
Having worn my hair medium length for many years of my life, here are some reason why:
It's versatile
Can be worn one length with or w/out bangs
Can be layered (usually resulting in a shorter med length to remove layers)
Easy to wash and dry daily
Easy to skip washing & drying daily
Unable to commit to long hair
Unable to commit to short hair
Could pull hair back in a ponytail (sometimes)
Husband wanted long hair
Same husband wanted short hair (this is when he saw Maggie from N. Exposure)
Medium hair is / was a holding pattern for me, sort of like circling the airport, I could grow it long from a nice medium starting place, or I could cut it short. Growing short hair to a medium length can be done in several months and once there the possibilities are endless.
medium length hair is just a good transitional length. It can be that platform to lift you up to short hair, or it can be your constant rock as the length grows. hmm that sounded really corny! haha

Most of my life I have had either really long hair or really short hair like I have now. But I did wear my hair for about a year in a medium length bob after having had long hair past my waist.
At that time a medium length, chin length-bob hairstyle seemed like a short hairstyle to me. Now with my hair in a short pixie it seems like long hair to me.
I guess it's what you are used to.

I definitely prefer short, but sometimes if I get really lazy for a year or two (don't laugh-- it's happened a couple of times) my hair will get long, at which point I get rather upset with myself for letting it go that long and start trying to work my way back to short. Medium is like a transitional stop I make along the way, I guess because it's easy to do even by myself, and it's less drastic, so it results in fewer negative comments from all the weirdos out there. *laughs* The things that are fun about medium hair, for me, aren't many. *shrugs* I used to put up little ponytails or braids at each side to keep it out of the way and so you could see my earrings. People found the little ponies or braids very cute. Some people seem to think I look best with medium hair (even though I strongly disagree :-P ), so I get more compliments that way. But the things I don't like about it outweigh the positives; it's long enough to get in the way, but not always long enough to make a proper ponytail at the back, which results in constantly tucking or fastening it back at the sides just to keep it from being so annoying. Medium hair, if not fastened back at the sides, covers all but the longest of my earrings, and what's the point in wearing cute earrings at all if nobody sees them? Medium hair makes me feel really childish, like I should be wearing plaid jumpers and playing hopscotch :-P , and I think more people see me that way when I wear it, too. If I don't wear bangs with it, I spend all day pushing it out of my eyes, but if I do, it only makes the schoolgirl feeling of it even worse :-P . I have really fine hair that starts to look flatter the longer it gets, and even just at medium length, it looks pretty wimpy. Oh, and I really hate the feeling of my hair over my ears-- even if I'm just wearing a bob wig, the way it feels heavy over my ears, or worse, even tickles them, is really annoying :-P .
Twanda how long is your hair? I consider mine medium-length presently too: meaning a few inches past the shoulders. I am aiming for another three inches of length.

Tina really said it best about one's perception of length. After growing my hair for a year it was just past shoulder length and that seemed long, yet not long enough. I could also relate to Kuroneko and everything she said about medium length hair as my hair is also fine.
Lyris, I cut my hair in a short pixie about 4 weeks ago.
Before that my hair was just past shoulder length. First I layered it, next I cut that into an inverted bob with longer sides than back (this never really worked for me) with a little bit of hair shaped in a short V down the neck, after that I cut it to an all one length bob keeping the V, and finally to a pixie where the V became the longest part of my new short do. I got all these different hair cuts in about 3 - 4 months time. After growing it out to mostly one length , I really didn't want to go short again even though that's what looks best on me. Now I'm really pleased with my hair short again.
I do agree with what you have said. Most of my life I had waist length hair as well as chin-length bob. When I was younger, I always had to have long hair...but now I find long hair boring and requires serious commitment to its health although it's very pretty and envy of many. But I'm definitely over this "long hair" desire and I love my current mid-length bob and I'm dying to have my hair layered like this hairstyle below:
Do anyone sport this hairstyle? It looks like a choppy, layered shag bob. I look better with length a bit shorter in back (sort of like inverted bob) but not too straight edged or sleek. I like that bed-head look, a bit messy and fluffy.
I've also had medium length hair, but there's really only one reason I haven't grown it out, and that's because it breaks and splits at about 3-4 inches past shoulder length so I have to cut it off.
