In an article about Prom Dresses written by Karen Shelton of HairBoutique.com she pointed out in studies of reactions of people to fashion and gowns, like Prom Dresses, color is the very first thing people notice about your dress or fashion.

Of course, as Karen pointed out, our response to color is highly personalized which explains why you might be drawn to a particular color or color group but your parents, friends or partner may not be drawn to that color at all.

Psychologists have pointed out that in scientific studies, it can be proven that people react physically to certain colors and looking at certain colors can raise or lower blood pressure, heartbeat, rate of respiration and brain activity.

Colors can calm, excite, anger or depress.

Of course not everyone reacts intensely to colors but some people do.

Colors also change according to the seasons with warmer and darker colors for Fall and into the Winter with lighter colors for Spring and Summer.

Depending on your hair, skin and eye coloring some colors look better on your than others.  Also, tones within colors.  There used to be a color classification system based on eye tone, skin and hair tone known as the Seasons Of Color and it would tell you if you are a Winter, Summer, Fall or Spring.  Each of those four groups can wear the same colors but slightly different versions.

Winters can wear jeweled colored purples while Summers might look better in lighter purple hues such as Lilac.

Of course the key point for Prom Dress colors is to make sure the color you select is on that you love, that looks fab with your own hair, eye and skin tones and can be properly accessorized.

There is no right or wrong color for a Prom dress, unless of course your school has a ban on a certain color.

The only rule for selecting the color of your Prom gown is to let your date know so they can color co-ordinate your flowers.

Great post!  I agree colors can affect emotions and feelings; this is something that most people are not conscious of.

I also agree that the color you choose for a prom dress or any important garment for that matter does depend on your personal preference and style, although I would try to stick with something that is flattering to both skin tone and figure.

There are so many beautiful colors out there but sometimes people tend to stick with colors that are safe and familiar to them, by doing this they may be missing out on a lot of flattering dresses. Sometimes you just have to try something outside of your comfort zone because you may not realize how amazing a color looks on you until you try it on.

I really like the color blocking trend that is so popular and fashionable right now, if done right these looks are really trendy for summer.
