Slovak 'fro

I just got my super thick "hunkey hair" (probably only a term familiar to people in pittsburgh area) cut into a shorter shaggier cut (shorter layers than normal). I went to style it for the first time and it is just this giant puff. Awful. Any suggestions from other people whose hair tends to go puffy with blow drying on how to control it?

P.S. I don't want to have to spend an hour straight ironing it out every day either.
