the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences (the
organization responsible for issuing Recommended Dietary Allowances)
has proposed a new definition that differentiates between dietary fiber
and added fiber. According to this definition, dietary fiber consists
of nondigestible carbohydrates and lignin that are intrinsic and intact
in plants.
