Hi Everyone,

I am new here and would really, really appreciate some help. I have naturally very dark brown hair, almost black that likes to pull red/orange very easily. It also is very difficult even with bleaching to get it light. I have, however, been lightening it to light blonde for the past 10 years. I get a light brown base color and thick highlights done almost on my entire head which is done with bleach then toner. My hair looks like the typical bleach blonde, not a lot of dimension or depth.

I want to test out going dark blonde. I want to do it in a way that even if I don't like it, I can go back to light blonde without damage or having to re-bleach my entire head. Is there any way at all that this can be done and if so, what products are recommended to go from light bleach blonde to a neutral dark blonde (not brown or too dark). I know even with semi and demi colors, they can be permanent if done on light hair. I am a bit hesitant and not sure if I'd like the darker blonde since I am so accustomed to the light hair so I want to know that if I don't like it, it is reversable to a great extent.

I haven't found a good colorist that I can go to and I don't reside in the US so my choices are really limited. I can buy whichever recommended products online though, so feel free to recommend.

Please do advise me if you can. Thank you so much.

I'd recommend test strands. Lightened hair can be really unpredictable and pick up the base colors in everything. This means if you cannot buy at a beauty supply shop, it will be even more unpredictable because you will likely be getting boxed dye which does not give you the base color information to work with. Since your hair is so lightened, it is very porous, so whatever you put on it will likely come out quite easily (even permanent probably wouldn't stick more than a couple of months), but, anything will add more damage over bleached hair, so testing is good, not only for the color but to make sure you don't hit the breaking point.

So, I would buy a dark blonde, then test it. You can just mix up a small amount of it to use only that and save the rest. If you wait a few weeks after doing it, you can also see how your test strand does after a few washes, (whether the dye just comes out or goes a funky color because its on lightened hair). (I just did this on my lightened hair which was then dyed brown, I got dark brown semi-permanent and it came out purple black! Unfortunately the test strand is only getting more purple each time I wash it, so I'm probably not going to be using the stuff).
