Chickpeas and oranges, water and soya, almonds and hair packs; all combine to save the day for your hair and treat hair loss! So, complain no more and get set to fight hair loss with this easy action plan. Here are some natural remedies recommended by experts to prevent hair loss.

Dr Ritu Mathur, a hair specialist, some natural remedies for her hair loss. “However, natural remedies cannot prevent hair loss. They can only control it,

Eat right: A healthy, balanced diet is the first step, says Dr Mathur. “If your body does not get enough nutrients, your hair will become weak, leading to hair loss,” she says. Her first recommendation is soy, which gives you iron and vitamin E. “Iron is important for haemoglobin, which brings oxygen to the scalp. You hair cannot grow without this. Vitamin E increases blood circulation in the scalp,” she says.

Almonds enrich the scalp with vegetable protein. Fish gives it omega-3 fatty acids. Oranges supplies your body with vitamin C, which helps in the absorption of collagen. Then there are chickpeas, which have zinc and vitamin B6. “Zinc is necessary for the absorption of the many vitamins. Lack of zinc can lead to dandruff, which causes the hair to fall,

Pamper your hair: “Massaging the scalp for a few minutes everyday will lead to stimulation of blood flow to the scalp,” says Dr Mathur. Massaging can also lead to minor hair growth because your scalp is getting more blood.

Unrefined coconut oil controls hair fall to some extent. Other oils you could use are almond oil, lavender oil and jojoba oil. These oils stimulate the scalp. “Jojoba oil is especially good because it replaces the sebum in the scalp. It also controls dandruff,

Help your hair: Using an Aloe Vera hair-pack is another way of controlling hair fall. “Aloe Vera heals the scalp by balancing the pH levels in the scalp. It has cleansing properties which clear up your pores,” explains Dr Mathur.

Henna is one more natural conditioner Dr Mathur recommends for the hair. It will make your hair look healthier. Applying natural conditioners such as curd and egg on your hair will make it stronger, she adds.

Cleanse and detoxify: An unhealthy diet or lifestyle will add to the toxins in your body. This can lead to hair loss. Cleanse your system for a better body, skin and hair.”Drink lots of water and get your vitamins and minerals. The hair is the first part of your body which will show signs of what is wrong with your body,” Dr Mathur says.

If your hair loss does not stop or if you are losing large amounts of hair, consult a doctor. “If you are losing more that 100-150 strands of hair every day, it could be because of a disease

Baldness in Women – Some Hair Raising Facts

Many women would be shocked to learn they are equally susceptible to pattern hair loss as men, though there are slight differences between male and female pattern baldness.

Baldness refers to a situation in which the hair falling out from the head are not replaced by new growing hair. The most prevalent type of baldness in women is Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPH) or Androgenetic Alopecia.

What is Female Pattern Baldness?

Each single human hair grows by about one centimeter every month, for two to six years. After completing this cycle, it falls out and is soon replaced by a new hair. At any given point of time, almost 85% of hairs on a human head are in the growing phase while the rest are dead.

The human hair is embedded in the skin in a cavity called the follicle. In people beset by MPB, the follicle shrinks. Due to this, hair gets shorter and finer till the stage when the follicle has no hair inside. Normally, a new hair replaces the lost hair but in balding people, the follicle fails to grow a new hair.

It is normal for an adult woman to lose 80-100 hairs in a day. Women who develop FPH show a rapid hair fall and a gradual thinning of hair all over the head. It is estimated that almost half the women face some degree of hair loss by the time they reach the age of 50, though it may start as early as the onset of puberty.

What are the symptoms of Female Pattern Baldness?

The basic underlying symptoms of female pattern baldness are:

- The thinning of hair usually starts from the center hair-parting.
- Thinning occurs on the top and crown of the scalp.
- The hairline does not recede or change unlike male pattern baldness.
- Hair fall is usually not so severe as to cause total baldness as in men.

Patterns noticed in women vary in appearance, though diffused thinning all over the scalp is universal. The various patterns that can be seen are:

  1. More noticeable thinning towards the back of the scalp.
  2. More noticeable thinning towards the front of the scalp, without affecting the hairline.
  3. More noticeable thinning towards the front of the scalp, involving and sometimes even breaching the frontal hairline.

How does this condition differ from Male Pattern Baldness?

Pattern Baldness can be seen in both men and women; however, the two differ in the type of pattern that evolves as the loss progresses. Men usually show a receding hairline at the temples and the formation of a bald spot at the crown of the scalp.

As the condition worsens, the bald spot becomes larger and larger. Women, however, do not show any distinct pattern of hair loss and show only a diffused thinning of hair all over the scalp. While men may become totally bald, women are not likely to turn so.

However, both male and female pattern baldness are supposed to be initiated by the action of androgens (male hormones), though in females other factors might also be responsible for the same. In women, it is caused by a combination of androgens, aging and genes.

How can Female Pattern Baldness be diagnosed?

To diagnose FPH, we need to:

-          Rule out other possible causes of alopecia.
-          Study carefully the degree and pattern of hair loss.
-          Study the medical history.

After carefully observing these, the doctor will carry out tests for other signs of presence of too much male hormone –testosterone (like abnormal new hair growth, changes in menstrual periods, new acne, enlargement of the clitoris, etc.)

The doctor may also need to carry out a skin biopsy or other blood tests to diagnose the degree and causes of FPH.

Ludwig Scale

The Ludwig scale is used to categorize the extent of hair loss. Type I is used to convey a gradual thinning at the middle, while Type III denotes almost total loss at the center.

ludwig%20scale

Rapid and uncontrolled hair fall can be devastating for women. In spite of that, they should be sensible and not be be fooled by the numerous oils and lotions which promise them thicker, luscious curls.

Recently I was very sick for a year and I started losing my hair due to my rapid weight loss. My doctor told me it is a deficiency of vitamins and taking a good multivitamin, eat lots of protein and drink lots of water. Also be sure to give your hair a treat every week so it does not dry out and break.

The results are surprisingly effective and can do wonders for your hair, however unpalatable the idea may seem. Cholesterol serves as super conditioner that will hydrate and strengthen hair, allowing it to prevent breakage and split ends.
