Are Keratin, Brazilian and similar types of hair treatments safe?

The FDA is now being asked to control and regulate all Keratin and related products.

"There have been many complaints about adverse reactions to these products these straighteners, particularly Brazilian Blowout, that contain formaldehyde; loss of hair, blisters on the back of the head, burning eyes, inability to breath well," says Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

That's why Schakowsky and nine other U.S. representatives are asking the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the products. Some workers are also concerned because they deal with the products on a daily basis.

Precautions like having a well ventilated area and only doing up to two treatments a day.

Even though formaldehyde is a carcinogen and can cause cancer, some stylists are not worried.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has already issued an alert to salons and the FDA is now looking into the treatments.

Lawmakers are asking for warning labels at the very least and to ban some of the products with high levels of formaldehyde.

I had a friend who had the Keratin treatments.  Her hairdresser told her they were completely safe but then she got really bad headaches and she has bronchitis.  It caused her bronchitis to flare up and she is worse than ever.  I think they are unsafe but that is just my opinion.  And her hair eventually reverted to its original texture.

Good to know.  Thank you. If anyone has had these types of treatments please share.  Did you like it?  Did you have a reaction?  How long did it last?

Some hairstylists understand the risks but do the treatments in a well ventilated area.  Does that really help?
