Hi there,

I'm in desperate need of some good advice about what hair colour to use. I have natural 'red' hair - well it's more an orangey brown (but not a bright ginger). I've got a cool skin tone. So far I've only had it coloured twice and that was in a salon (last time was back in February) - I still wanted to keep the general feel of my hair - just wanted it richer and glossier and a little darker but still with the general redness (I guess - get rid of the slightly brassy orange that has a tendency to shine through). I loved it when it was coloured and although wasn't a drastic change (indeed some people didn't even notice!) I thought it looked so much better.

Since then I've moved and can't afford to get it done in a salon so want to go down the home colouring root and have a couple questions:

1) the home dye boxes never show the suggested result for a redhead (its always only for blondes or brunette) - how do you know what it's going to look like?

2) I would only ever do semi-permanent colour at home (indeed in the salon I only had semi permanent done) - perhaps something that lasts 28 washes or so. Is the right step? And what brands are best/easiest?

I'm thinking something like Loreal Healthy Look Creme Gloss Colour in medium red. Any thoughts? or is that likely to be too dark?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Laura - I hear what you are saying. I a, also a natural redhead and trying to change it up just a little but there is VERY little information on how red hair takes color. There is a lot of info on how to get there if you are not a natural redhead but too little from the other perspective.
I would try a henna to start out with. Have you gone that route before? From what I have read, if you chose cool tone colors, you won't get too much brass.
On the bright side, you are the better side of it...going darker should be a lot easier. Let us know how it goes.
Sorry I couldn't be more help...good luck!

If you go lighter its harder because red it the hardest color besides "jet black" to get out of hair. I would also recommend staying away from box dyes they are full of crap you don't want it your hair.
I would just try sally's grab a color your looking for if your going darker it shouldn't be a problem reaching that color first time. If your trying to go blonde that's harder. From my understanding your going red on red?
Shouldn't be hard at all. Stay with semi that's easy and red with wash out always with anyone its just that way. I would also gab a clear gloss and add that to the color mixture or do that after you color your hair that will help hold the color longer and give a very nice shine. (plus a little extra protection) they only last about 10 washes or so but worth it. Just stop at a sally's and grab the stuff you need. I personally don't care for Loreal but that's just me.
If you don't have a sally's and have to use a box dye I say look at a medium brown and the color red it says will be pretty close to what you will get because your already a red tint so it should be close.
Good luck
