A friend of mine (a Nepalese girl of 22, who speaks 4 languages but no English) has problems with losing hair. She came to live in Belgium, about six months ago, and from that moment on she began to notice that she loses quite some hair. Every time she grasps through her locks, some hairs have come loose. She has very thick wavy black hair, about 15 cm below her shoulders and she blames the hairloss on the water which is different in Belgium and, according to her, harder on her hair. I think I should also add that she is a vegetarian and eats extremely little. - Do you have any idea what the reason might be ? - In the end, will she get bald completely ? - If it is temporary, will she regain the lost hairs so that her hair will again be as thick as before ?
Hair is one of the first casualties of anorexia - if she's not eating much and looks far underweight, this might be a possiblity. However, before you go that extreme route, there's a lot of factors to consider. How much has her diet changed? One assumes the food's a bit different, vegetarian or no. Did she have any hair products she used in Nepal that she can't get there? New shampoo? Is she wearing tight buns most of the time? How often does she brush her hair? Is is windy where she lives? Tangles can result in hair breaking, too. Has she ever had her hair this long before? If Belgium does have hard water, there are tablets to put in it, she'll just have to hand wash it in the sink instead of the shower and wear a cap while bathing. But, water's water, in the end. She should look for other causes before dismissing it as just the water's fault. Will she get bald completely? Doubtful. More likely the hairs are breaking, in which case they'll grow back. If she doesn't find out what's made her hair so weak, though, she might find it growing back thinner and prone to even more breakage. Good luck!
