Short broken hairs..how to hide them?

Due to hair abuse: lightening, heat styling, etc, I am left with short broken pieces of hair.
It's terrible! Sleepy 
How do I blend those? Some are 3 inches from my scalp and they want to stick up, not lie flat and straight with the rest of my hair.  Really bad!  Is there a product I can use to blend it in and fake it looking nice?    
I know leaving it alone would be best to not cause further damage, however I am not willing to go out of the house looking like a crazy person.Confused
Happy mama of two (and I have serious hair issues!)
