Okay Johan you are entittled to your opinions. Its admazing how you (American) feel you know more about my country ( being born and raise for 42 years as a Canadian). lol
Mr. Minneapolis being the from the capital place of popcorn lovers seem to know more about us Cookie eaters of the world.

You are funny. If you knew Canada as well as you do you would realize that the USA does not has all the influence in the fashion market in this country. WE are influence by Paris and secondly by England.

Our medical field is influence by the ehthic of England.
I was a fashion rep for years and this is a known fact. Its takes us three to four years to keep up to the Europe market. Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto in the following order is our influence markets for fashion. This also applies in the eyeframe area. The eyeframe companies from the states quickly learned that us Canadian are European influenced. That is why American marketing companies have to change their sellling techniques and include the french wording on every product. ( That is the law) That is also why you won`t see newer eye frame with large frames here in Canada as you do everyday in the USA!

WE love our queen from England. Some of us are not so happy about them but still many of us still feel part of the history and in our hearts. Heck in my city we name a part of the main street call Queen Elizabeth Way "lately. Have you ever heard of Upper and Lower Canada? Do you even understand the passion of the two languages and the history? That is the whole battle of our politics.

You want to take about crime rates. Go ahead. Anyone that is isn`t born here in Canada and come here can safety walk down our streets. How many times I have heard from American reps that they have to drive away with arms in certain part of the states because of racist hatred. Our schools are filled with cultural richness. I have many diffirent cultural friends which are encourage to bring in this country their family beliefs, languages, dishes etc.

If Canada is so much like the states then you should question why so many Americans tend to come here and feel this is a great country that they can relax and feel safe. Plus we don`t finger print people at the border base on their colour!

Dear Diane,This isn`t a contest between the United States and Canada about which country is better, both countries are great countries, and I love both countries and am proud of our part of the world, North America.
All I was pointing out is that just as some U.S. citizens wrongly believe they are better, or more important than Canadians because we have a huge population and are an economic and military superpower, likewise some Canadians have an annoying smug sense that they are "morally superior" to the U.S., that you don`t have people who are racially prejudice, you have very few criminals, you live in a utopia that is so much better than the U.S. and the rest of the world, etc. , which is nonsense, you are human! Americans are not more important than Canadians because we live in a superpower country and Canadians are not morally superior, you have some nasty people as the U.S. does, although with our much larger, and quite honestly, somewhat rougher population, you are right, many of our cities are more dangerous than Canada.
And there is no doubt Diane that Canada is changing, anyone can see that unless you have your head deep in the sand, and there are demographic changes and problems in the future for Canada, as there is for the United States, just in a different way, Canada is possibly facing an underpopulation problem due to a drop in birthrates, the United States is potentially facing an overpopulation problem due to higher birthrates and excessive immigration. these problems won`t manifest that much real soon but after that, certainly in our kids lifetime, these problems will become more serious.
But I wish both countries well in solving their problems, and I will mention once again Diane, I love Canada and wish you the very best!
Love,
Johan

Hi all. I also posted this in the same thread in the `Teen` section, but this thread seems a lot less dead.

Okay, men in dresses.

In the goth scene in Holland, a lot of guys wear skirts, and sometimes dresses, and I can honestly say that I love the look on most of them.

Note, however, that I`m not talking about guys who simply put on their girlfriends` dress, pantyhose & pumps (though that`s fine if it makes you happy), but about skirts & dresses especially made to fit the guy. Nor am I talking about really tight and clingy dresses, personally I feel that men`s bodies are too chunky and boney to pull that off. Plus that really is a woman`s style.

Simple (black, since it`s a goth thing) floor-length skirts made of velvet or rubber (velvet is nice in wide skirts, PVC is nice in less wide skirts with slits up the side, for instance), maybe decorated with buckles . . . yum. Makes the guys wearing them look different, yet still masculine and incredibly hot!

It`s such a pity that my own boyfriend would rather die than wear a skirt . . .

The website of my housemate (www.xdh.nl/ronald/persoonlijk/) features a picture of him in a skirt. The skirt itself is not really visible, but the overall effect is very nice.

Well, it was pretty much dea here too, though you may have re-opened it ;).
I agree that short or tight dresses/skirts would not be a good look on a guy, but I see no reason why loose skirts etc could not be unisex, you girls are lucky, you have no idea how often I have envied you girls your skirts during the summer, or you heels (I`m kinda short)

Hmm, personally I have never worn a dress or skirt until I was 19, which is now, so I`m not of the enviable type.

I think the only difference in girls in dresses and men in dresses is that heavier girls can still look smashing in a dress, but the fat-distribution in guys (fat belly, skinny butt & legs) doesn`t make dresses any more flattering.

So, if you`re resistant to being laughed at (though usually behind your back, so you might not even noticed) and find a type of skirt (I think dresses might be a little over the top in this society) that flatters your body and doesn`t make you look girly, I`d say go for it.

Although it`s probably a lot easier if you also put on tons of freaky make-up, dye your hair fire-engine red and wear a vinyl or latex top with your skirt. Then the skirt becomes one of the less noticeable things about your appearance. :)

lol, I dont think I want to go that over the top ;).
As to the type etc, any advice as to how I can find a skirt that is not `girly` on me and will actually look good?

I don`t know what your body type is like (apart from you saying that you aren`t very tall), but I`ll try to do my best. . .

For length, I suggest floor length. Most guys don`t really care for showing off their legs anyway. :) I wouldn`t go for a conspicuous colour, nor one with a pattern (flowers, eek!). Black could be good, or dark blue/dark greyish. That also depends on what colours you normally wear, of course. If you should choose a colour that is way out of character for you, people might find it even stranger-looking.

What else . . . ah, yes, fabric. I`d go for heavy fabric.
If the fabric is very thin and `dances` when you walk, I find it more girly and conspicuous. Heavyer fabric isn`t as `clingy` either, which is a huge part of the sex-appeal of dresses on females. And besides, if you wear a skirt made of heavy fabric, it`s not as cold. I don`t think you`d want to wear pantyhose as well, do you? ;) They definitely aren`t comfortable. . .

As for type, choose a skirt that`s not too tight (guys generally take big steps and would feel horrible if they stumble all the time). Too wide isn`t necessarily bad, as long as the fabric behaves itself.

Okay, and now for the most difficult part: to not make you look girly. :) A big part of that is making sure to emphasize the masculine qualities you have. I don`t know if you have any facial hair, but that`s pretty masculine. If you don`t, there are probably other traits you could show off. For a top, choose something not too baggy, if you are comfortable with that. That should emphasize your shoulder/hip-ratio. Or maybe a sleeveless top to show off your arms?

If you`ve got an androgynous body type, then simply make sure to eliminate anything girly from your clothes. Leave the frills, happy colours and such at home. :) Maybe don`t shave for a day or two before wearing a skirt.

Keep in mind, though, this is only my opinion. And I generally don`t find guys in skirts girly at all, so the reactions you`d get from others will be a lot less unbiased.

Good luck, and even if you decide to never wear a skirt in real life, I think I`ve given you a pretty good manual for Halloween. :)

Lol, good manual all right.
Well, I`m short (as I said), and rather on the skinny side and long-ish limbed, but I`ve put on a bit of weight lately, I`m starting to grow out my hair too, it`s about 5 to 6 inches long all over. I was also thinking about getting my ears pierced, always wondered what it was like ;).
Any reccomendations on any of the above? (eg, skirt suggestions? etc)

Just came across this thread, and want to add a few overall insights here, as the original question was extremely vague, and responses went all over the place as a result.

There are basically four types of "dressing" with men in dresses (or skirts) and many of them has been mentioned as assumptions to what the OP was trying to ask (and finally explained the "style/purpose of his asking this wide ranging question.  In summary they are CDs (crossdressers), TSs (males with woman's minds), drag queens (gay males), androgenous (blending gender looks), and fashion forward men, of which this OP was apparently asking about for himself, once some clarifications were posted.  Note the the common preception upon reading this "should men wear dresses) is the rediclious image of just sticking a woman's dress on a average man and then in many if not most cases he looks bad....if not terrible.  Adjust the man to the look, and also the look choosen to the man and you can in most cases end up with a much more desirable look/appearance...depending on both your objectives and the clothes selected or designed.  BTW, a heto male who is crossdressed is NOT considered a drag queen...i.e. the phrasing of heto drag queen is wrong and in fact a bit degroatory for the group being alluded to...they are simply crossdressers (CDs).  Drag queen by definition is a gay man dressing as a woman...and rarely wants to "pass" unknown as a woman(and likewise a Drag Queen is gay woman presenting as male).

There has been different sites and in fact companies that cater to this area, and some strive to make their clothes quite masculine in style even if a dress or skirt, and some tend to be intentionally a little more more "feminine" in style...more to loosen up the gender boundries a bit more.  If fact much of those sales are to woman buying for their guys...and often are lingerie styles worn under more traditional male clothing.

Anyway, here are a few related articles to consider on this topic:
which linked to this great pics:

As you can see the clothes doesn't make him look feminine, in style or his body, even though he has shoulder length hair.  In fact his longish hair nicely style give the look good "fashion forward" appeal.  And in my view rather sexy, though he would have extra sex appeal just with that hair.

Another good article, and includes more styles of dresses/skirts for men is here, and with the photos you see the effect is quite good:

For many more articles do a search on "skirts made for men" as the word "dress" is too vague of term such as as "dress shirt" etc and those come up first.  Go with skirt and that will be more more rich of results.

So let's do away with stereotypes (think 50's style fat male crossdresser with no wig on even...like shown in older movies), and gender/clothes (and hair styles even) assumptions, and as always been the main criteria it's the right match-up of person to clothes and hair styles that makes or breaks a look, and of course the place on the overall specuum highly depends on what you are striving for in your appearance (as fashiion or some blended or full cross-gendered expression.  Here, as it turns out is here it's a upscale man looking as a male, not a crossdresser, and willing to experiment with clothes, hairstyle and jewelery.

Hope this helps and belated readers of this topic,

Oh, and for those who say they haven't seen any men wearing dresses around....you silly you!...that's because they LOOK LIKE WOMAN, and some are in fact "new woman" and you can't tell the difference!  If they were snakes you'd be bitten lots of times by now!

C -- true for perhaps evening look, but daytime go medium material and shorter for comfort.//

C -- Agree, and being confident in himself, and not so afraid of what other's might think, is the sign of a "true" man to me, and think few men can go much outside traditional boundries without extreme trepidation.  But the ones who can, and can take some minor gender bending even, are sexy to me!//
