QuoteReplyTopic: who has taken hair growth pills? need advice Posted: August 17 2004 at 10:39pm
I have been considering taking hair growth pills like folicure, formula 37 and hairtopia. When i check all of their ingredients its just like multivitamins and herbs. they have many herbs like fo-ti and horsetail and many many more. When you search these herbs the side effects are horrific, basically what it looks like is you reck your whole body to grow hair. Has anyone used these before, are they really that dangerous? did they hurt you? did they work? also can you take them with multivitamins? please give me your honest input. thanks
I have never taken specific hair growth vitamins to grow my hair. I do take multis and get adequate amounts of protein. i also try to reduce stressors in my life. When I first started growing my hair (this last time) I did a lot of reading about the vitamins, just as you have. I ended up coming to the conclusion that less is more when it comes to growing hair. Lots of the simple things are what it needs to grow. Oh, and patience! Start treating your hair as though it is as long as you wish it to be. Take loving care of it, enjoy it. it will be there before you know it.
P.S. I get about 6 inches a year of growth and try to avoid the hair salon like the plague.

In addition to taking the usual and customary vitamin & mineral supplements, I also use horsetail herb (which contains silica) and saw palmetto (reported to be good for "men's health"). I have noticed no downside to taking these additional supplements.
What have you heard about the downsides to certain supplements?
Heres some info i found on horestail/foti. In addition to these side effects, they are not fda approved, which means the quality of the herb is not guaranteed(unless you trust the company) and i dont believe much research has been done on the effects.
The unprocessed roots may cause mild diarrhea.6 Some people who are sensitive to fo-ti may develop a skin rash. Taking more than 15 grams of processed root powder may cause numbness in the arms or legs. http://www.vitacost.com/science/hn/Herb/Fo-ti.htm
Horsetail has been well tolerated in studies. Some people experience stomach discomfort or nausea and more frequent stools. Nerve damage has occurred. Symptoms may include confusion, difficulty walking, visual disturbances or amnesia (loss of memory). These symptoms are believed to occur because horsetail lowers the levels of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the body. Skin irritation may occur and may be caused by horsetail allergies. Horsetail may also cause low potassium levels or low blood sugar. Another possible side effect may be muscle weakness, but this has not been studied in humans. Be aware that many tinctures contain high levels of alcohol and should be avoided when driving or operating heavy machinery. http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/8513/31402/348993.html?d=dmtContent
Horsetail is generally considered safe. The only concern would be that the correct species of horsetail is used. Equisetum palustre is another species of horsetail, which contains toxic alkaloids and is a well-known livestock poison. http://www.vitacost.com/science/hn/Herb/Horsetail.htm
I've posted this somewhere before, but fo-ti (polygonum multiflorum) is a Chinese circulation herb that is supposed to make your grey hair go away. We drink it as tea, and hairs grow back jet black. It could affect non-Asians by making their hair grow in darker... I've seen no other side effects.
Hmm... I'm not sure if it speeds up hair growth, because hair in my family grows fast anyway. You could try Fo-Ti and see if it does, since it is perfectly natural. Be sure to get it from a Chinese herbalist and not just any source. I doubt it really makes hair grow faster... just makes it stronger, so it doesn't break off or fall out while short. Hope this helps
What has been your experience after taking such pills? Do you notice a considerable difference? Where do you buy them from? If you say its good, I'll start buying them too :D
i have tried horase shampoo and usd vitamins from gnc and i have not seen any side effects.....buttt, naturaly on my arms and legs i do not grow hair at a very rapid pace and my arm grows hardly any whatsoever. in conclusion i do not think it would be bad, but it your skeptical go with what you want
I don't think Fo-Ti turns hair /black/ unless that's your natural hair color, but it might help restore pigmentation. (Nothing you injest will turn your hair from, say, red to black.) PABA is said to do this too.
The herbal supplements you're describing are taken by a lot of people, including me. The side effects mentioned are just "possible" side effects that could be attached to any medicine or supplement. (Read the insert on allergy pills or birth control.) They have to be recorded if even one person claims to experience them in a study.
People can have adverse reactions to binding agents in the capsules or to the herb itself, just as they can have bad reactions to Twinkies or Diet Coke. If you react badly, stop taking the supplement.

Is there really such a thing as a pill that will grow your hair faster? If there is, why are there so many bald men?
Do not get me wrong. Some bald men are very sexy. It's just that most seem to want there hair back. If it was as easy as taking a pill. Then the company that made the pills, would be Ga-Zillionars.

I've tried the hair formuala 37 and I wouldn't bother again. I know it's received rave reviews on some sites but frankly, I didn't notice a difference in speed of my hair growth. I think it has more to do with genetics than anything else....

Hi, I have taken Viviscal several years ago with very good results. Have also taken HairFormula 37 with good results and they were more affordable than the Viviscal. I am now taking the Viviscal again.
