QuoteReplyTopic: Help! I'm too young to go bald! Posted: August 19 2004 at 1:37pm
For a while now, I've been losing hair in massive amounts. My hair doesn't look any different (I'm not really going bald, lol)...but it's SO annoying. It clogs the shower drain, it gets all over the bathroom floor, and all over my bed. Everytime I shower, clumps (okay, not really clumps...but about 20 or 30 hairs at a time) come out. I know hair naturally falls out in liberal amounts all the time, but this is just ridiculous.
Besides that, I have really long hair (past my elbows but not quite to my bum) which makes it even more of a nuisance.
I've been told that if your hair gets too long, it starts falling out. But I really, really don't want to cut it.
Are there any products out there that will just keep my hair where it belongs? I don't really need regrowth...just something that will make my hair stay put.
(1) You said you're not noticing any change in hair thickness.. As long as you're not losing thickness, and your hair is growing back its loss, everything should be okay. Just keep an eye out.
(2) Losing massive amounts of hair without "net loss" is perfectly all right (Usually). And summer often increases shedding--I find this especially to be true, and this happens with nonhuman animals too. And don't listen to that myth : ) about losing more hair when it's long.. many longhairs experience less shedding as they grow. As long as it's a nuisance and not a concern, your hair loss is pretty routine.
(3) Some hair vitamins decrease shedding. Some of my friends have had luck with MSM, but they only see results after 2 months.
I too lose a "massive" number of strands when I wash my hair, just before, during, and after.
In addition to AnaisSatin's guidance, something else to keep in mind is that since your hair is so long, losing even a few strands seems like a lot of hair. People whose hair is short, and lose the same number of strands you do, won't notice the fallout since the amount of hair [(number of strands) x (length of each strand)] is much less.
I lose lots of hair, and it doesn't seem to be getting any thinner.

I totally agree with Anais and Dave (btw Dave, your hair looks awesome!!).
I also have been losing a lot of hair recently, but it seems to look and feel thicker than normal. I noticed that I go through 2 seasons of shedding -- summer and winter. I lose disproportionately large amounts of hair (to me, at least) during these times and it can be a little disconcerting to say the least!
Just remember it's the body's way of replacing the old with the new. And like Dave said, when those with longer hair lose it, it looks like more.
