I am an 18 year old senior. My stylist is a beautiful young lady who I have known all my life. She is a neighbor and is three years older than I am. I have had a crush on her since grade school. She has been cutting my hair for a year now. We flirt amazingly while I am in the chair. We also see each other all the time around town. This may sound crazy, but I believe she is interested. I guess you could say I have turned out pretty good(6'0 180 Blonde/Blue eyes). She has always said I was cute since she baby sat me years ago. Now however she says I am Hot and wishes I was her boyfriend. Well here is the dilema...She really thinks I should get a perm. I just dont know how I will walk down the hallways, my friend will laugh me out. What should I do?? By the way she is 5'5 with brown hair/honey highlights amazing blue/green eys...I just dont know....

Yep, here comes another of my cranky, pro-natural advices:
DON'T DO IT. Perms (fortunately) went out in the '80s or
what. They are unhealthy for the scalp as well as the actual
hair. My mother in the '70s went to a reputable Italian
stylist, and he left the perm on too long and "fried" her
hair. Even worse, when Oprah Winfrey was an anchor woman,
they FLEW her to, like, New York or some place to get a
makeover. The stuff they used for her perm made ALL her
hair fall out. You wouldn't want that would you?

In any case, I think perms have always generally looked
bad on both sexes. Maybe it's just that I like straight hair
but many people would find it funny if you came to school
with a fake 'fro or whatever. In the mid '90's, there was a
trend toward the natural look, but now there's been a
resurgence of artificiality (spikes, streaks, yellow-orange
hair bleaching etc) Go ahead and date the girl-that's
great-but she should like you for who you naturally are...
