QuoteReplyTopic: Should I chop my hair off? Posted: March 31 2001 at 2:24am
Hi everyone! I just broke up with a long-time (jerk) boyfriend and I feel like a new person. I want to totally change my look to match, but i`m kinda nervous about it. My hair is about to my shoulder blades, mousy brown, and stick-straight. I`m tired of looking the same-should I cut it short or just medium length? What about a perm? What about coloring? My friends all tell me to keep it long, not to change it, but I don`t feel like it`s me anymore. And what about the guys out there? What do you like? After all, I`m single again, and I could use any advice and opinions you want to give. Thanks everyone! Love to all!

Sorry to hear you broke up with your long-time boyfriend. I know (as do most of us, I`m sure) how hurt you must be feeling now. What do I like, and most other guys I know like on women? Long hair. Yours sounds beautiful, not mousy! I love all colors of hair (as long as they`re natural). There are a lot of ways to style your hair, you are lucky to have enough length to be very versatile. Try to learn some new styles for your hair, up-dos or braids. Who knows, your next boyfriend might be attracted to you in part because of your long hair. :-) Good luck!
NO! PLEASE DONT BUT I DO HAVE AN IDEA YOU COULD CUTIT AT ABOUT 4IN AND THEN COLOR IT RED [NOT REALY RED] i SAW A GIRL THAT HAD THE HAIR DO I WAS TALKING ABOUT AND IT LOOKED SOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL SENCEIRLY KIMBER

If you really want to, I think you should. I mean, I know many girls that keep their hair long because all they want to do is please their boyfriends. Not all guys like longer hair. Plus, if it would make you happy, go for it. If you would like to talk about it, please write me email. I would love to help you out. -Brian

Whatever you do, don`t perm it. It`s expensive and damaging, and I at least like straight hair. I also generally dislike changing the color of your hair. NOW: if you`re really set on cutting it, how about a traditional, one-length bob (I generally don`t like short layered hair) about jaw to chin length, or if you really want to do something drastic, an angled bob?
Now, on the other hand, are you SURE you want to change your hair just because yopu broke up with your boyfriend? If that`s the only reason, I advise you not to - it`s not a good reason, and you may regret it.
Or, how about letting your hair groooooooooooooooooooooooooow? It can`t hurt.
If you can, tell us what you decided.

I`ve been thinking about chopping off my hair so I can kind of relate but I`m not sure if breaking up with a boyfriend is a good time to do it unless you wanted to cut it before you broke up too. I think if you want a change and you don`t like the color of your hair that you should try like a temporary color to see if you like it. A reddish or auburn color might look good if you have light or medium brown hair now. Or if you are serious about a perm you could try setting your hair on a Sunday so you can be curly on Monday to see if you like that before getting a perm. At least it might be fun to be different for a day.

Hello, I think you hair sounds beautiful and you say all of your friends like it, so this can be an objective assessment. It is not easy to have something that makes joy for other people and I would not throw it away if you are not seriously tired about it. With perms and coloring you can easy damage your hair, with updos you may change your style without loosing the hair. There exist guys who like short hair and guys who like long hair, that doesn`t tell anything about their human qualifications. I myself love long hair.

I really don`t think you should cut your hair off, it sounds really lovely and I can`t see any reason to go and cut it. If you really wanted a change then change the color, but I really don`t think cutting it off is the right thing to do. Most guys in the world like girls with long hair, and from my experiences, very few girls look as cute with their hair short as they do when it is long. Just because that jerk of a boyfriend hurt you, please don`t ruin it for the rest of us guys out there who would totally adore you with your long flowing sexy brown hair. If you would like to discuss this further with me, please feel free to email me at johnrm@origin.net.au. I really hope you won`t cut your hair as it won`t look as hot as it does now.
That`s the thing; I have been thinking about cutting it for a while now. I`ve had long hair since I was a kid. That jerk was very opposed to the idea, and so I never did it, but now........ By the way, I tried a temporary red wash on it and it gave me a pretty nice red-brown color. I`m thinking about doing it permanently. Thanks for your responses!
Hey, I think you should try an elevated bob that starts at about mid cheek and slopes back very high in the back. The nape of the neck should be clippered very short. I think that where the longer hair meets the shorter hair is very alluring. The back will be even with the tops of your ears. Check out the elevated bob and the red head in this link. Let me know what you think!
So if you have been wanting to cut your hair since before your breakup then maybe now would be a good time. Did you have any ideas on how you wanted to cut it? Do you just want a change or is there any other reason you`ve wanted to cut it? If you just want a change then you could get some layers or bangs or something without chopping it all off.
there`s something so boring about the traditional American girl`s hair do! You all seem to have it the same and do the whole"we`re sheep!" thing and copy each other.
I say BREAK THE MOULD and do something a bit different. After all, you don`t want to be walking around looking like a clone do you?
Go for choppy layers and chunky highlights in coppers and golds. This will add texture and will make your hair look thicker, fuller and shinier.

Hmm... your appraisal seems directly opposed to your recommendation. The "choppy layers and chunky highlights" look hardly breaks the mold, rather it *defines* the trendy, follow-the-herd copycat thing to do these days.

If you want to be safe you could always go to one of those stylist that have a computer and can easily show how you would look like in each style, hair color and perm. YOu might enjoy that or you might end up liking the way you are. I had a few perms in life not a big deal but you have to find someone that has a good reputation doing them.

hi, i hope everything is going good with you dealing with the breakup. i was in the same situation as you are in, my ex-boyfriend and i broke after four years. i also wanted to change my look, i had long hair and i just decided to put medium to long layers in my hair to get a visual of what it would look like short without screwing my hair up. i think you should that so you don`t cut it too short and not like it. im sure with the breakup the last thing you need is something to make you feel insecure about yourself. if you need to chat please send me email good luck-babybear
hey, i think you should go for it and get it cut really short. thats what i did awhile ago. i had been talking to my ex, and he told me not too, so i DID do it. :) and i`m so glad i did. i get alot of compliments on it, (its short and spiked out on the back, and a bit longer on the front so i can tuck a bit of hair behind my ears) it totally gave me confidence and stuff like that, so i think you should talk to a hairstylist and ask if short would look good. i dont think its cool how girls keep there hair long and boring becus of what guys like. short is awesome as far as im` concerned, also, what color r your eyes, and consider the shape of your face too. well, good luck seeya. ~mandie_51@hotmail.com~
Thing is, Firshala, it`s not up to your friends, its not up to anyone on these boards, its up to you - you have to live with it! I first got my hair cut to just under my jawline from about your length when I was 13 (I`m now 18) and kept it about that length or shorter ever since. My b/f likes it, so anyone who says men only like long hair is full of sh*t, and more importantly - *I* like it :) You`ll take a week or so of never leaving it alone with a little bit of paranoia, but you will adjust (IF it is what you really want). You say you don`t want to have the long hair any more as it isn`t you - well make your mind up and take the plunge (IF it`s what YOU want!). Good luck petal,
Red hair is so sexy, so is a person who is willing to try differnt things. I say go for it chop your hair, it will grow back if you don`t like it and at least you will have tried. I think girls with short hair are as sexy or more then girls with long hair. There are a lot of hair cutting web sites you can check out to see if there are any styles you might like. Just remember to keep your face shape in mind if you do go short, not all styles fit everyone. Good luck with your makeover and boy hunting. Just remember not all guys are assholes just the majority!
