I am wondering what people used to tight up their hair before elastics were invented. I know people had metal, bone, wooden or horn hair accesories like hair pins. I suppose that they also used small pieces of leather to tie up ponytails. But how would they make a bun?? Would they tie their hair with a ribbon first and then wind up their hair and pin it in a bun????

I am asking because I think maybe elastics are breaking my hair. I use the thin covering kind that don't have metal. Are these elastics bad for hair. If I make two braids, what else could I use to tie them?

I don't think elastics are particularly good for hair (the thin ones that is). Even the ones with no catchy metal parts still bend my hair. Probably the safest thing to use is those little terrycloth type ones you can get at the drug store, or any elastics that are cloth covered and on the thicker side.

I don't know anything about hair history, but if your hair is bsl or longer, you can twist up up into a tight bun, then weave a hair stick through it and it should hold fine with no elastics or pins. I used to wear my hair to work like that every day and it never fell. If your hair is thinner, you may do better with shorter sticks than long. (I even saw a girl with thigh length hair do this with only a pencil, and she had a 3 coil bun).
