Diane, take a chill pill!! I admit that those women chose to have their hair cut, but I happen to think those talk shows are a load of crap. It`s a bloody circus! You say that those women cut their hair by choice, but what you failed to mention is that they made themselves look like absolute daft idiots! They are sending as is the show in and of itself a message of negativity about long hair. What ALWAYS happens on a makeover show??? They cut the hair! Do you not consider that negative?

Dear Cinder,

I`am pro choice on the matter. Don`t kid yourself not everyone is prochoice. Like I said before you wouldn`t catch me and probably not you on the show.

Also Cinder there is more than one way of looking at things. How do you feel when people tell you that your style that you love doesn`t suit you? How do you feel when people start telling you how you should style your hair?
These message boards are full of people that shared including myself from time to time about relatives and friends that told us that we should look different and yet myself, probably you and others have never went up to anyone and tell them how to style their hair, so how can anyone tell anyone knowing how it feels how they should look ? It hurts people feelings.

It is just hair. It grows. We only live once. Why not do what we want with our hair? We should be happy when we see women havethe courage to change a bit of themselves because this is what they want

I have watch many of these shows and never once I seen negativity coming from their decisions. They were brave and tried something different. Some people fear trying anything different thinking that people will laugh or talk about them behind their backs.

You can suggest chill pills all you want but I know I am right. Sad days were when women couldn`t vote. Celebrate the fact that you can wake up in the morning and decide what you want tomorrow. Celebrate freedon and choices you can make.

Diane, this board is called "Long Hair Support". I just don`t understand why you are so argumentative on THIS particular board. There has got to be one on Hair politics, you could post on.

Cinder,
I have read through quite a bit of these postings, and have found that Diane seems to like hearing herself rant and rave about the men (or other controlling people) and how they like to take the rights of women away. (She also seems to enjoy dominating a message board by posting messages so continuously, no one has a chance to reply!) I agree with her postings in that it is a sad state of affairs when a woman can`t even cut her hair for fear of repercussions, but as you stated earlier, her postings are better suited to the "hair politics." I believe she is so argumentative on these boards because she knows that there are people who have a certain view/style they favor that happens to differ from her views and will argue back. Although she is supposedly an advocate for long hair, I still don`t understand why she insists on provoking people who may/may not share her views of hair choice. Oh well! I just wanted to let you know that I agree with your view.

Diane,

The show was not about women having the courage to change themselves -- it was about cutting hair. Was there a single "makeover" which did not involve women cutting off significant amounts of hair? Was there a single "makeover" where a woman was told long hair would work better for her and she should spend the next year growing it out?

Some people, myself included, think the end result of these shows is to mock women with long hair. Frankly, aside from those with haircut fetishes I can`t see who these would appeal to.

Well Robert,

As far as these shows go, the majority of the ones I have seen have actually been for good causes. The hair that is cut is donated to "Locks for Love", an organization that makes wigs for children who are treated for cancer and have lost their own hair.
I know there have been a few instances where the women with super long hair actually did not look good. The hair was dry, frizzy and looked rather unhealthy to tell you the truth. Of course it takes some persuading for these women to cut their hair, if it didn`t they would already have hair of a shorter length.
And finally, has anyone noticed that on a rare occasion there are men on the show who get their hair cut also? Altogether, from my own experience, long hair is rather high maintenance. (these women also speak of the problems they experience with their hair-getting sucked into the vaccuum, stuck in a car door, getting caught under their husbands while in bed, etc.) I found that it took so long to wash, dry or style that it really was not worth it, even though it`s naturally curly. (And let me just say, I`ve never chemically manipulated my hair with a perm or color.) Yet, when I cut off my hair from waist length to right above my shoulders, I found I had so much more time for other things, and there was a certain kind of weight that was lifted from me.
There also have been women who love their new hairstyles. I have seen a few who get a little teary and say they will grow their hair back, but I have seen the majority say they love their new `dos. And come on, it is only hair and it will grow back, regardless. I`m sure many of these women base their identity on the length of their hair, so when it is cut, of course they feel a certain sense of loss! But if they are truly confident within themselves, they will decide to keep their new looks or go back to their old ones on their own, and not just because they`ve always had that look, or so and so liked it that way. They will do it for themselves.
Okay, I sort of rambled on that one, but you get the idea. It`s not such a tragedy that these shows happen.
