I`ve read in a few places that it`s best to keep long hair in a braid or a bun to prevent it from becoming damaged from the wind, air, and pollution. Is this true? Anyone with long hair (atleast waist length) wear thier hair down often? I love to wear my hair down and show it off, since I spend so much time and money on it, it would be a shame to hide it all the time.

Hi kat,

My hair falls just below the waist. Actually, I wear extensions, but the hair has a tendency to tangle even more than natural long hair. At night, I wear a loose braid and sleep on a silk pillowcase. During the day, I almost always wear it down with one big exception -- exercise or when I`ll be in a very "windy" situation. One time I went running with my hair loose, and it was a mass of tangles when I returned! Thus, a loose braid makes a huge difference.

I`m certainly no expert, but it seems to me that if you wore a bun the majority of the time, you might risk damage from the band that is constantly around the hair. I think treating the hair as gently as possible is the key. If you`re going for a ride on a motorcycle, I think it would be a lot healthier to tie your hair back (and definitely safer!).

No, if your hair is not exposed to some strenuous
activity, I see no real reason for you to worry about
wearing it down.
