There are many tips on this forum for how to get and keep long hair. Read as many posts as you can for nice discussions and differing opinions.
For a start, don't use a blow dryer on a hot setting or wash it in hot water, don't use things in your hair that have seams or sharp edges, don't ever backcomb it, be careful when you detangle it to start at the bottom and work your way up (not yanking any knots out from the top down), and clarify your hair at least once every 2 weeks to remove buildup.

Excellent point, Beatnik Guy. When my hair was really long, so many people asked me how they could get their hair as long as mine. My response? -- don't cut it. Simple as that. I was a starving student for 8 years. I couldn't afford trips to the salon or expensive hair care products. Hair just grows -- that's it's nature.
Moon Sister, there's no secret to growing your hair long. Susan gave some very good advice on how to keep it looking healthy while it's growing. I have some to add:
(1) Let it dry naturally whenever possible. Avoid heat styling.
(2) Avoid chemically processing your hair (dyeing, bleaching, perming, straightening)
(3) Don't brush it when it's wet -- just use a wide-toothed comb
(4) Shampoo your scalp only -- there's no need to lather and vigorously scrub all of your hair. It strips moisture and leads to tangles.
(5) Use a moisturizing conditioner
(6) Don't wash your hair more often than necessary. Your hair's natural oils are the best moisturizer.
P.S. I don't always take my own advice. My hair is bleached. Keeping long bleached hair looking and feeling healthy is a lot more work.
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)
