I can finally cut my hair

Hello my name is Joky (its a nickname). Anyway, I am Puerto Rican and it is kind of a rule in my culture to have long hair. It is part because of culture and part a religious belief. So I just turned 17 and my hair has not ever been more than a few inches above my waist. I was never allowed to cut it any shorter than that, although I have wanted to cut it shorter at least once. Right now it is a little past my waist and I havn`t even had a trim since November and I really need one. I have been asking my parents if I could cut it for a long time, and on my 17th birthday they told me I could go get my hair cut any way I wanted it and they would pay to get it done at a really nice place in the city where they do a great job. I need help picking a perfect style. I am so excited, the appointment has been made for about 2 weeks from now, April 11th, and I want to get a good style. My hair is almost black and pretty curly, but I straighten it often. I am not afraid to go short because it has been on my mind for years so I`m not turning back. Hey, the big day is getting closer and I am trying to narrow it down. I was wondering if anyone has pictures of when Hally Berry grew her hair out into the style whene it was mostly above her shoulders and very layered, like in that one Pepsi commercial, I really liked that. Also I was wondering if I get my hair cut short, like at or above my shoulders when it is straight, will it look right curly too? Cause I know it will look shorter when it is curly. I was actually thinking of getting my hair chemically straightened and cut short for a really big change since it is my first chance to really make one and I don`t knbow if my parents will continue to let me get my hair cut however I want it. Haw short would you go if you were in my position? I want it pretty short, I was thinking about getting it real short like a few inch pixie but I don`t know. I like the idea because I would get to have my hair in so many styles as it grew out, but I don`t know if I can handle the initial shock of having almost no hair, remember I have never had my hair much shorter than waste, plus my parents might disown me if I get my hair that drastically cut. I know I want to go shoulder length or shorter though so give me some ideas for short hair.
