please give me some adive??

I used this salon selective self highlighting stuff and it turned my medium brown hair a golden color. I totally hate it! I kept it like this for a whole year because I didn`t know what to do and now i`m going into high school and i want it different. I always wear it in a ponytail because I`m embarrassed about it. Under the top part its still all brown and my roots ar starting to get brown so please help. I want to get it back to brown and then get it highlighted all in one day and will that hurt it? I want to get it highlighted so everyone doesn`t ask me what i did to my hair. It won`t look so different if i get it highlighted too(but a blondish color). This will end up costing like 150 - 200 dollars if i get this done and i don`t really want to spend that much money. so does anyone know how to change it to a lightish brown color with highlights instead of dying it brown and then getting it highlighted? Thanks for your time. Please help!

Ignore that last message! I don`t recommend doing it your self. I do recommend buying some strong shampoo like Vosene and spending a day simply shampooing to see if you can fade the colour any. After that I would try a 24 washes dye (that way if you don`t like it you can wash it out, if you do, then it will last at least 21 days and then you can decide if you want to dye it permanently) in a colour similar to your natural colour and see how that looks, do get a good quality dye though. I wouldnt bother getting it highlighted as I think your hairs been through enough. As for what people will think... I`m sure its not as bad as you think, but getting rid of the dark roots will be noticeable even if you highlight. At least this way any regrowth will be less noticeable, and I`m pretty sure that you`ll get compliments on a monotone look. Hope this helps.
