QuoteReplyTopic: How can I curl or wave my long hair without heat? Posted: February 21 2005 at 11:50am
I have hair that is almost BSL and really straight, and I'd like to have curls or waves sometimes for a change. I'm against using curling irons on my hair because of the damage, so I'd like a method without involving heat. I've seen these twistable bendy curlers at stores but I've never tried them. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks!

When my hair is still wet (but not dripping wet), I'll put three buns (two works fine too) one on top of the other in my hair. I make sure to twist my hair pretty tightly to keep it secure, and then I just sleep on it to let my hair dry. When I wake up and let my hair loose of all the buns, I went up with anywhere from soft curls to kinky waves. =) If it's frizzy, I just run some oil over top of the curls real lightly. HTH!
I like bunned curls! It curls the ends and leaves the top straightish, that was one of my favorite styles!
You can also use those bendy curling things you were talking about (use them on wet, but not dripping hair, then sleep in 'em until it's dry). You can also do braids all over your head when it's wet for a more wavy look. The more braids, the smaller the waves.

If I were you, I would try velcro rollers or pincurls..you can also do a wetset-which is putting rollers in your hair while its wet and sitting under a dryer until your hair is dry..but its time consuming and pretty hard to do on yourself... Then there are velcro rollers...great for long hair--and you use them on dry hair..They are easy to manipulate and use. Hot rollers are heated, but not so much that they should damage your hair...Another technique that you can try(And takes a little practice) is pincurls...go check out this site: http://www.nocturne.com/swing/hair/pincurls/pincurls.html Most of the curly retro styles are done this way, but many stars use them for more modern styles these days..If youve ever seen Love is in the Heir on E!--Princess Anne Claire does her hair like this, and it looks awsome..like she did it with a curling iron.

If you want more curls than wave, you could try rolling your hair with "rags." Just roll small sections of your hair into loops and tie them with a small strip of cloth. When extra dry, take out the cloth strips. Leave as is, or just some gentle finger combing/fluffing.
I also use the Conair rag rollers since I often don't have time to cut my own strips.
I also do wet buns, braids (the bigger the braid the softer the wave).
Since I only shampoo my hair 1x a week I will often blow dry it straight the first day. Then about 2-3 days into my week I will spritz my hair with a water bottle and then braid my hair before bedtime. Next morning, I have Veronica Lake style waves. Which is a lot of fun.
Also, I agree that Velcro rollers can be horrible for long hair, especially if they get stuck. However, I have experimented with the following type of curlers for "wet set" where you roll your hair when damp and sit under a big hood dryer. This is less drying to delicate strands:
