Do you really have to cut them or is there anyway they can be saved? I have read so much about hair care products that let you "mend" the split ends? Can anyone recommend a product that would do that?Joan

I read somewhere (probably from Karen!) that split ends are like a shredded fingernail. You have to trim off the damaged part, no way to actually "repair" it.

Hi Joan,Unfortunately, the only way to get rid of a split end is to cut it off. Once the hair is split, there is no way for it to repair itself at that point. The idea is to trim off the split portion before it continues to split further up the hair shaft. Some professionals prefer to just cut inches from your length as a way to get rid of split ends. What I learned to do from long hair pros like George Michael is to trim long hair while it is clean and dry. When I have a finished a section I am trimming for length, I divide the section into several smaller sections, twist the hair tightly, and clip off the split ends that pop out of the section. You must use very sharp scissors, and cut perpendicular to the hair shaft to derive the most benefit. It takes a while, but your hair will feel great, it will not tangle as easily, and your hair will continue to grow uniformly and long. If your hair is long, you should get the split ends trimmed every time you have the length trimmed, or more frequently if you have a lot of split ends. To prevent split ends, conditions the ends of your hair, don't blow dry or use hot rollers or curling irons (if possible). Don't let a stylist talk you into a major haircut just because you have a few split ends. Good luck! John R> Do you really have to cut them or is there> anyway they can be saved?
