I was just feeling curious--makes hair curl naturally? I've heard it's because the hair shaft is thicker on one side than the other, kind of like those ribbons you use to wrap presents, and you scrape one side with scissors to make it curl. They said that's why curly hair is so much dryer than regular hair. If that is so, why do so many curly-haired people have really coarse hair? I have very fine naturally curly hair (although it's really thick), and find that if I use heavy conditioning products like they recommend for culry hair, it weighs my hair down and kills the curl. Answers/suggestions?

For people with curly hair, it's flat; and in people with straight hair, it's round. The main reason why curly hair is drier than straight hair is because the oils don't completely get to the ends as easy as with straight hair. Coarseness of the hair is determined by the diameter of the hair strand. The bigger the diameter, the coarser the hair texture. I have extremely curly hair that is medium to fine in texture. From what I'm getting from your message, you probably don't have coarse hair. The book where I got this information is NO LYE by Tulani Kinard. I hope I have helped :-)
Read Karen's interview with Ouidad that was put up tonight (7/14/98). It explains just about everything you want to know about curly hair. Amazing. I have been fighting my curls forever and now I finally have some answers.Terri> I was just feeling curious--makes hair curl> naturally?
