I have shoulder length, layered, thick, sorta wavy hair. When I blowdry it straight (time consuming, damaging) it looks great. But when I let it airdry I only get waves underneath & frizz on the outside. It so big on the side & flat on the top that I just pull it back. Keeping it long enough to pull back is there a haircut, product, styling or blowdrying technique that can help? I have tried KMS Curl Up with no real success.

Hi Jennifer,I'll take a stab at this based on a couple of conversations I had with ladies today. First, it sounds like the longer your hair, the more wave and the less frizz. One option would be to let the layers grow out a little and let the extra weight tame the frizz. If you do that, there is the problem of the extra volume on the sides that you apparently don't like. Since your hair is thick, you could just pull the top and sides up to give you height with combs, scrunchies, or attractive barrettes. You could also use some mousse along with a curling brush to tame the frizz and give you some height that will last. There are also a lot of anti-frizz products on the market that you could use after you shampoo to control the frizz. You could use a pic after you put the anti-frizz solution or mousse in your hair to lift your hair, and use your fingers to place it where you want it to give you a more uniform look. Second option would be to get a long layer cut or a Gypsy shag cut. These cuts would reduce the volume at the sides and ends and make your hair more uniform. However, you would most likely have to experiment with different products and styling instruments to deal with the potential for more curliness and frizz. Third option is to stay close to the length and cut you have now, but have the shorter layers thinned slightly and textured on the ends. This should allow the thick layers to stand up a little more and give you some height. I hope this helps. Sounds like you have lovely hair. Find a stylist who will be patient enough to work with you for a bit to find the right cut, and then show you how to do the finished style that meets your needs.
