HI! I find that in my area of Canada we have this attitute that short hair makes a woman look younger and when we reach 40 we should cut our hair. I have long thick, dark hair down to my waist and I find that once in while the attitude is that I should cut it . I refuse and I am growing it longer. What about you?

None of my classmates have hair past bra-strap length, and only one has it past her shoulders. I understand why they keep their hair short - it can get in the way a lot in the lab, and grad students tend to be very busy, so taking care of it could be a problem. (Yes, some short hair takes much more time than long, but they all have very low-maintenance styles.) Their hair is very practical, which is fine, but I dislike the pressure they put on me.However, after a year of classes and seminars with me, they're getting used to it. I very rarely get any trouble about it anymore. I guess they have figured out that I'm not likely to change my mind. (Considering my hair is to my waist, they should have guessed it before, since hair doesn't get that long overnight!)I'm definitely with you on this one - don't cut it unless you want to. The whole age thing is nonsense anyway. (You'll find lots of people here who feel very strongly about it, too!)Laura Jane lswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu

I have seen many posts from women on this site who are age 40 or older with similar questions or concerns. I am in my 20's and feel that age is not the issue. I believe that in the United States long hair is very unpopular. If your hair is at your shoulders or beyond, many people wonder why you have it that long. I think this is especially true for men, regardless of their age. Likewise, long-haired women are becoming rarer and rarer. Laura Jane's response seems to echo my belief. To Diane, I say, "Let it grow, girl!" My great-grandmother was Canadian and kept her beautiful,lower-seat length for life (well into her 80's). I just wonder how she could wrap those chignons. Where there's a will........

Sounds like you and I have a similar wish. I have always admired my grandmother and greatgrandmothers very much. They both lived in small towns outside of Toronto. One of the towns was called Guelph. The family was also in Montreal. Both were Cayugan Indians.I have a picture of my greatgrandmother which I cherish. I did not have the pleasure of meeting her. She was a tall woman like me and blazed many a trail well before most women thought about it. Knowing my grandmother, I know that she received not only physical beauty, but great inner strength from her mother.Take care and grow, grow, grow! Jade..

And perhaps I don't pay attention to others' opinions (OK, probably I don't) but I feel no pressure from anyone. But then again, maybe they've given up on me. I have a friend older than 40. Long red hair. She looks great! Why should she cut it. Keep refusing, keep growing. It's not their hair, it's yours
