I have light brown hair. It's cut really short with longer bangs that I sweep to the side with a cute clip- I tease the back up to give a little volume. I would like to experiment with chunking. I don't know what colors would look good on light brown. I would like to use a dark red or maroon color. I heard that Loreal's Feria line is good. Would that be good for me to do at home? I have a friend who'll do my hair. If I go to my stylist-it'll be soooo expensive!!! Can I add chunks myself or do I need a professional?

Hi,I have a suggestion. Before you make a commitment to a permanent color, why not experiment with the new hair mascaras? I found that the pomades works really well. Better than the actual hair mascara that comes with the brushes. You can pick out a color that is close to what you would like to use permanently and paint it into your hair to see how it looks with your hair and your skin and eyes. You can also do the same thing with a temporary color. You can also experiement with pin in hair strips.I always strongly recommend practicing with different colors before you go for the final deal.A good rule of thumb is to never to go more than 2 shades lighter or two shades darker than your natural hair color. You can also determine what colors are good for you by your skin tone and eyes. If you have cool skin tones and eyes go with a cool color, if warm then go with deeper warmer colors. As far as doing the chunking at home, I think if you do enough research and practice with either a temporary color or the mascaras before you are ready to do the permanent color, you can do it.Chunking is one of the hottest way to do color right now.Another option is to go to a professional for the first chunking and watch closely what they do. Ask lots of questions. Ask what color they are using and why and then watch how they apply the foils and where. Then you can try it yourself if you want to.Check out the review of the hair coloring book. This is probably one of the all time best books on how to color and highlight hair around. It is a Milady book and they are all excellent. I have probably read this book 50 times from cover to cover. It does have a section on chunking.Best wishes. Let us know how things turn out for you.Karen> I have light brown hair.
