QuoteReplyTopic: SPF for Hair! Posted: January 12 2000 at 3:42am
I'm thinking of highlighting or all-over coloring my dirty blonde, virgin hair. I spend alot of time outdoors in the spring/summer. With Spring just around the corner, will shampoos with SPF protection prevent the sun from altering/damaging the colored strands of my hair? Thanks!

Thanks!I read somewhere that SPF in shampoos washes right out and does no good. You actually need the SPF in a leave-in conditioner in order for it to stay in your hair.
> Not only is Roberata correct about SPF shampoos, the entire concept of SPF in any hair products is misleading. The SPF in skincare products is controled by the FDA. This Means that if a moisturizeer or sunscreen says SPF 15, it is legally required to block a certain amount of rays. The FDA considers SPF for the skin a health issue because of skin cancer, melanoma, etc but considers hair products just cosmetics and cosmetics can make whatever claims they want. To make a long story sort, the SPF in hair products are not regulated. Your best bet is to get as much hair as possible under a hat.
I've been using Nature's Gate Aloe conditioner as a leave-in. It says it blocks UVA & UVB rays. Regardless, it smells really good and leaves my hair really tangle-free.Related Link:Bowers-Bahney Communications
