I`m serious here, don`t think I`ve completely flipped, but.... This is just the place I`ve been looking for. I am completely obsessed when it comes to my hair. One day I`m wanting it down to my waist, then when I have a bad hair day, I want it all cut off. I am impulsive to say the least. But I really do want to let it grow.

It`s in a shag type style, in which I like very much. I love hair that is all one length, but I just do not look good in that style for some reason. Maybe the shape of my face or whatever. Anyway, I am going to try and stick with this thing! It is just now growing down on my collar, so this is gonna be a long road to travel. I have frosted hair. Well, I get so tired of frosting it, not to mention the damage that it does. I just don`t feel like myself with dark hair. I was always blonde, but as age has crept upon me, it has darkened my hair. Any suggestions? I just want long, healthy and beautiful hair. It used to be that way, many moons ago. Thanks for the support!!!

Welcome Meg:

YOu are not the only one around that wants to look good lol. I understand what you are saying. For the longest time I had short hair above my ears. When I graduated from highschool my hair was above my shoulders. When I got married I went into those feelings of wanting longhair but seem to always cut it. Now years longer I have long hair that reaches the middle of my back and the longest it was when it reached my waist but a happy inexperience hair stylist decided to cut my hair all one lenght. I suggest take hair vitamins and if you happen to come across biotin grab it and take it because a very long hair stylist once told me that when she had very long hair that is exactlly what she took and her hair grew like weeds.

Meg,
You sound just like me!!!! I too am growing out a shag and now have it just a tad past my shoulders. I am also very impulsive about cutting, my main frustrations are the layers that I am trying to grow out and the humid environment that I live in that makes them look frizzy. I also highlight my hair every 3 months. I have just really made a commitment to grow my hair, and told my hairstylist and she has been very supportive. Do you use the same stylist at every cut and color? If so make sure you communicate your hair goals to her so that she can keep that in mind when you have one of your impulsive haircut moments!

Meg,
Great to hear you are growing it out. Have patience -- it`ll be worth it:) On the General Hair Talk board you (I think it was you) posted a question about blow drying, wanting to know how to avoid blow drying although your hair is not as full without blow drying. Here`s a trick that my wife uses -- I wonder if any other readers do? When your hair is still wet after showering, comb it straight back without parting it and let it dry part way like that for a while (15-30 minutes). Then part as usual and just blow dry for a minute or so if necessary to turn the ends under a little or otherwise help your hair dry in a nice shape. The "back combing" and leaving the hair like that for a while builds in extra body without spending several minutes blow drying, avoiding all that heat damage. Also, just after showering & conditioning, it is easy to "back comb" the hair without tangling or breaking it. The advice about sharing your goals with your stylist and making sure he/she shares them is great advice. Anyway, good luck.
John

Hey John!! Thanks for the support. Lord knows it is sooooo hard to let my hair grow. The thing is, is that I truly do look good in short hair. I love short hair. I`m not talking butch here, but like jaw length. But I seriously want to let it grow. I have a nice textured hair, and it does look pretty as far as the actual hair goes, it`s the style that is lacking right now.
The advice you gave sounds really good. I will try that tomorrow. Today I did wait awhile before blowdrying. I mean, it was almost dry, but not quite dry yet. It is so shiny and healthy looking, but FLAT! I will try your suggestion and thanks, thanks, thanks......Meg

Oh girl(diane) I would take every vitamin out there, but, I have a bad tummy and it won`t allow me to take them

How do you make it through that stage of when your hair is just killing you!? How do you stay in control and not cut? That`s my problem, I have no self control. I cut it, love it, then hate it a week later and regret cutting it. I love short hair and I probably even look better in it. It seems to make me look younger, but I want long hair and I`m dead set on it. Thanks for the advice!

Hi Lisa.... I do like the shag though. I really do. It looks better on me than any other hair cut that I`ve had. And it does kind of give you the appearance of long hair, or at least I think so. I, like you, am making that commitment to grow my hair long. I just wished that it would hurry up already, jeeeeeesh:)

I went from a short shaved hair cut to a bob. I know how hard it is to grow out layers and not have a "style"! :P

I too am impulsive. I have a bad hair day and I am ready to get my hair cut. So, I make an appointment and go to get it cut. I pay my stylist $20 to sit there and listen to her tell me that she isn`t going to cut it, so I get a wash and a scalp massage and go home.

She is the cure for my impulses!

I hate waiting on it tho. Grow already!! LOL

Right now my hair is stuck and won`t grow. last month it was growing like crazy - from sept to dec I gained 3 inches and now it`s not moving at all. grrrr....

Hair type: fine but thick; natural blonde with 15% grey

Dear Meg:

IN my case I had a stylist that worked with it. He shaped my hair knowing my goals so that it could grow out. Yes it is very frustrating. The other thing for me that helped was keeping my hair off my face so I use to tie it back in a ponytail or make a bun. Anything to keep that hair off and not think about it. My ponytai at times was only one inch long lol
I happen to love barrettes in my hair so that really helped and today I see there is so many very nice hair pins etc. I had a few perms to keep me from thinking of cutting.

Hi Diane, yes this can be very frustrating for me, and I`m just starting out!! But, I can do it. If I set my mind to it, I will do it. Ok, here`s a big problem for me... My hair is in very choppy layers, especially choppy around the bottom. One side I can live with, but the other side looks horrible. I guess I should probably cut it to give it a fresh start, but there is no way that I`m going near a pair of siccors, I know what I`ll do, I`m not that strong, hehe. I let it air dry tonight and used some really good conditoner. It looks so good and shiny down to about those darned choppy ends. If I blow dry them and curl them, then they are not too bad. If I let it air dry, in which is what I really like to do, then they look bad.
Thanks for the support......

Why don`t you put your hair in a ponytail when growing it out - I had layered hair I was growing out, so I tied it up in a ponytail most of the time and it looked much neater. Then when I got the length I wanted (4 inches past my shoulders) I got a trim to even it up, and now i mostly wear it down.

Hi Meg,

Welcome to this board. Both Jeff and I have been growing our hair for years and it was actually Jeff who thought this would be a great topic to add

As far as the hair obsession you talk about, that is actually a positive thing when it comes to growing your hair. Like anything else, growing long hair takes time and commitment. So in your case, your obsession is a very good thing. :-)

I still wear my bangs and front of my hair around my face in a layered style. I also look better in a shaggy look.

I have highlighted hair but it is done professionally and only every 4 months. The stylists uses a cap and SoCol from Matrix which is a color, not a bleach. So it is gentle and does not hurt my hair in any way. I get to keep the highlights without the damage.

Hang in there and keep coming back. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Best wishes to you,
Karen
