I`m growing out my Something about Mary cut. The back it a little past my chin and the front is just above my chin (when I pull it down straight). I`d say there is about an inch (maybe a little less) of a difference in length between the sides/front and the back. I also have a few long layers, I guess they are called. My hairdresser takes a razor and lightly goes over the last few inches of my hair too.
My question is, since I`m trying to grow my hair, do I have to cut it all one length first? I know it`s only about an inch or so, but I don`t want to loose that length. Is is possible to grow your hair out, but keep your layers?
I liked my cut when I first got it done and it`s growing out with a nice shape. I`m getting my hair trimmed & highlighted in a few weeks so I was thinking about having her just trim and 8th of an inch off, but keep the same style.
Has anyone tried this before?
Also, how bad are steam rollers for your hair? I was thinking about using them daily for a little bounce. I use good produts on my hair and a good leave in conditoner, but I don`t want to create damage.

There is no reason why you have to cut your hair blunt (all the same level) to grow it out. Your layering is not very drastic, so there is no reason not to just let your hair continue to grow out naturally, keeping the slight layered effect. Then in the future, once your hair is longer, should you wish to, you could have the layering removed over the period of 1 or 2 trims if you desired your longer hair to be all one length.

Thanks. I really don`t like all one length hair on me. It seems to get a "bell" look. I love my layers and I`m glad I can grow my hair without having to cut them off!!!

Lisa,

I had my mid-back one length hair cut last Christmas to a shoulder-length long layered cut. I LOVED it! When I had it trimmed again a couple of months later, however, she cut it way too short, with a great deal more layering than the first time. Not to fret, however, the growing out stage has been fantastic! My hair is now below my shoulders and the layers never looked better! My flat, fine hair finally has life!

Enjoy your growing phase...you`re layers may be the best thing that ever happend to you!

I wrote that post awhile ago.
However, I did just get my hair trimmed today. Actually I had a few more layers put in , but I only had her take 1/8 of an inch off the bottom.
I think I`ll wait about another 3 months to get it trimmed again. I like to get my highlights and color done at the same time.
