What are hair glosses? I've read about them in magazines, and I understand that they are semi-permenent and make your hair very shiny. Are they bad for your hair? One article I read said that by getting a gloss you can help stop split ends and seal moisture into your hair. Is this true? Is there any way you can apply one yourself? (I'm quite experienced at dying and perming hair, so I think I could handle it, if its possible.)

Jen -I have had cellophane glosses put in my hair and have been very pleased with them. I have had clear ones that make my hair very shiny for quite a long time. They also come in different colors which can give a very slight tint to your hair, brightening whatever color you have. I never noticed any damage resulting from them and have found that in addition to the great shine, my hair feels very smooth after a gloss. From my experience, I recommend them highly. It doesn't take very long in the salon, they apply the gloss and set you under a bonnet to fix it, and its not very expensive (I think I paid $25/$30 last time I had one). I don't know if it is available for home use. I also would be interested to know this. Good luck!!j

How long does a gloss last? How long is your hair, and how often do you have it trimmed? (That makes a difference in wether or not damage shows up. My hair is a little past waist length and I trim it about every 3 months.)

My hairdresser used it on me and never charged me extra. I have curly hair and it even makes my hair shiny, which isn't easy for curly hair. Now I use it at home (my aunt is a hairdresser and gets it for me). You put it on like a conditioner and just sit under the chair (I am lucky enough to have a salon chair with the heat dome). To tell you the truth, I don't understand why cellophanes are only for salon use. There's nothing to using them, just as easy as a deep conditoner.

My hair> is a little past waist length and I trim it about> every 3 months.)jen - i find that a gloss starts to fade after a while, but i get a good shine for about 2 - 3 months. my hair is between my shoulders and bra strap length right now. i have been growing it out for almost 2 years from a really short crop cut. when i had short hair, i was in the chair every 6 weeks maintaining and got a gloss every other time - but there was no way to see damage because my hair was only 1-2 inches long. when i decided to grow out my hair my stylist worked against me and would only "let" me grow out the crop to about 4 inches. needless to say, i stopped going to him. so i trimmed and glossed three times at 3- month intervals in the beginning. but i was having such a hard time finding a stylist i could trust and was getting so much pressure to cut my hair again (even from my boyfriend - who btw loves my hair now and wants me to grow it as long as it can go) i went 14 months without trimming a single hair. i finally gave in three weeks ago because my hair had no shape and my ends uneven. i found a stylist i trust (she didn't cut as much hair as i told her to because she didn't think it necessary). so i guess i can't really say the effects of regular glossing has been on my hair, because i went so long without. but i will say that my ends are very healthy (i have yet to find one split since i started growing it) and my hair was healthy during my long hair salon boycott despite prior glossing (and one rather unimpressive home coloring incident). i got a gloss three weeks ago and my hair gleams. i will update if i see any damage. sorry this was so long, i hope i answered some of your questions....:)j
