I'm beginning to think the water where I live is hard and that's what's drying out my hair. I recently went out of town to visit a friend and realized that no matter what kind of shampoo and conditioner I use there my hair is always soft and tangle free but at home my hair is dry using the same products. Is there a solution to hard water?

Is there> a solution to hard water?Hi. I used to live in Florida, land of the hard water supply, and no matter what I used, my hair always felt coated, and yucky. However, when I moved or travelled to other areas, it was like a totally different head of hair. Hard water played a *big* part in how shampoos, conditioners and styling products worked on my hair..which is straight and fine. For a while, I used a vinegar and water solution on my final rinse and that helped alleviate some of the problem, but it will dry out your hair to some degree. Plus, I felt like I smelled like a dipped Easter egg..so I quit the vinegar. You could try that..or I know that there are some shampoos that are specifically made for hard water. I haven't tried it yet, but there is a line of hard water products available through this site: www.robertcraig.com Go to his products section & you'll see it. You can read about him there too, if you're interested. Good luck! Kelly F.

If you own your own home (especially if you have well water) you can buy a water softener to add to your water supply. If you have city water you would need to speak to them first in order to find out how to go about this in your area. Good luck.
> Like Misty said if you own your home and can afford a water softening system it is well worth the money. The company you choose will do a water test to find out exactly what is in your water to be corrected. We had this done to our home. Plus also you can have a filter system added at the place where the water comes into your home. They are called Whole House Filters. These are not costly at all. But if your water is rich in iron these filters will not beable tohandle the load. Also they make the showerhead filters available at Lowes. These are made with a charcoal filter and are mostly made to remove chlorine. I keep one on my own personal shower just for the added protection. But like the smaller filters, they cannot handle a large iron problem. Do you have rust stains on your fixtures? That's when you need the larger systems. If you cannot do any of the above ..I do not reccomend using the shampoos that remove mineral build up on a regular basis. For one thing, you are still washing your hair in the same water and these shampoos are harsh so it's a catch 22 type situation and you are getting no where. Plus you could do major drying out of your hair or damage in the long run. I would recommend at the least that you use a good quality hair care product then use jugs of distilled water as a final rinse. Depending on the length of your hair... one or two jugs a washing would be plenty. Even tho we have the large water softening system, the whole house filter and the showerhead filter, I still use a jug of distilled water after each shampoo session.Distilled water is water in it's purest form and it's a boostto any haircare routine. I hope this info can help you as I know water damage first hand and it's not pleasant..best regards.. Cher~I'm beginning to think the water where I live is hard> and that's what's drying out my hair.
