Hi William,I have read some o fyour posts and you seem to have a great deal of knowledge and good advice on hair color. I have a question pertaining to Aveda's Blonde color line. My hairdresser swears that Aveda is not harmful to the hair and does not use bleach...but then how can it take my hair from a level 7 to a level 8? I am trying to grow my hair out natural to make it healthier and she thinks i look better more blond because she claims my hair is "ashy"...Is the aveda line "healthier" than most and wil it hurt my FINE FINE FINE fragile hair? Thanks so much for any info you can provide....CG

Maybe some other stylist could shed some light on the subject. As for any haircolor that 'lifts' to a higher level, it must contain some sort of lightening agent, whether it is ammonia, hi-vol peroxide or other ingredients. I don't care what brand color you use, there is no such thing as a 'true damage free' color product. There is some damage, even though it may be practically nil with certain products, but only an experienced stylist can determine which product/process is right for your hair. For first time users, and for minimun damage, amateurs should stick with 'deposit only' products. You should try a deposit only color in a 'warm shade' at least 2 levels lighter than your natural base color if you want to mute your 'ashen' tones. The reason you use a 2 level lighter color, is that with deposit only color, you are depositing color pigments (adding) to what you already have, and if you used the same level color as your 'base' color it would go much darker than expected due to the 'extra' color molecules being deposited into your hair.william
