I don't dye my hair yet. I will probably start when I have lots of white hair. My girlfriend always dyes her hair. She does it herself and her hair is in good condition.Lately she been growing her hair and now the lenght pass her shoulders. For the first time I see her real color so I questioned her to why she didn't dye it red as she normally does it. Well she said that she stop because her hair was too long. I thought she meant that it would harm her long hair but she really meant that it would be too much work right now. AFter discussing the dye situation with her , she claims that dyeing your hair is good because it has good conditions etc and your hair ends up feeling very soft.I am very confuse because I often have heard one shouldn't dye their hair so often etc . What is the scoop on all this?
Well when you do dye your hair it leaves a soft silky feeling for a couple of days. And its right want you heard dying your hair very often can damage your hair and some time cause hair loss you should wait 6-8 months if you use perment hair dye to dye your hair again and if its temporaryhair dye you should wait a 1-2 month to dye it agian it matter how strong and healthy your hair is.Well if you do have any more questions on this don't be afraid to e-mail me mallardg@aol.com.sincerlystacy
> How about colour shampoos???The type that colours your hair not take care of coloured hair.Well...I believe clairol has them.Anyway most products say you can redye the roots after 6-8 weeks. Is this ok?
Diane,There's no question that when you dye your hair or apply any chemical treatment, it will damage hair to some extent. The key is to make sure your hair is in good condition before coloring and deep condition afterwards. I color my waist-length hair myself. It's not an easy thing to do, I agree! I use permenant color (20% peroxide) on my roots only and the rest is treated with semi-permenant color. The semi is not as harsh as permanent color and my hair is still in good shape. If you decide to color your hair, I would suggest using a temporary color first. Get one that fades out in a # of washings. I actually enjoy coloring my hair myself and am able to get the right color I want that way. I studied up on it and began doing it myself after having it done at salons and NEVER getting the right color! It's a committment if you start dying with permenant color, you HAVE to keep the roots up. I use permanent color (roots)because I lighten my hair quite a bit from my natural hue. Clairol's Compliments line is good since it has the same shade level# for both permanent and semi-permenant colors. If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply around, this is found there. Also, check into using color-enhancer shampoos to keep the color true.
If your hair is long, you'll probably want to use a "filler". This is a conditioner-like treament you apply before you color to normalize the porisity of your hair length. Porisity Control is an excellent one, it costs about $12. Also, depending on your long length, adjust the amount of color and developer. Usual amount is 2 oz. to 2 oz., but I have to use 3 oz. to 3 oz.
> JM:You say you lighten your hair using Clairol Compliments: can I ask what color you use? I am currently growing out blonde highlights on my mousy light brown hair and then want to color it myself, as the highlights are SOOO drying. Thanks
They have a wide range of colors/levels available. I am naturally a level 2 color and I lighten to a level 6. I use Clairol Compliments R6-P (Permanent) and R6-S (Semi-permanent). It ends up a "Titanic" red (dark-red blonde)
