Who does one tip in a salon? And how much (a percentage or a certain dollar amount)?Also if you tip your stylist does she/he then tip the help (Shampooers, etc.) like a waiter/waitress would tip the bus boys and kitchen staff?Thanks for your help
Hi,Like everything else...tipping is a personal matter. However, the rule of thumb is to tip the stylist approximately 15% for a good job. If the stylist owns the salon than tipping is not necessary. The common thought about tipping the stylist is that they have to turn over a percentage of the fees to the owner...so the owner should not be tipped but the stylist should.However, just like service in a restaurant...if the service stinks than you should not feel you have to tip. A tip is a special thank you for special service. The better the service, the better the tip.Some people don't tip after each visit but will "save up all the tips" and present their stylist with a very nice tip at Christmas.If you are in doubt about how your stylist feels, ask them. You can politely inquire if they accept tips. They will let you know.If you get a shampoo and the stylist does not do it, tipping of the shampoo person is also considered appropriate. Many people will tip the shampoo person $1-$2.If there is a valet person for your car, it is also appropriate to tip them.Remember that tipping is voluntary and should be used as a reward system for good service.I am sure there are lots of differing opinions about this...so please....any stylists out there? All I can say is that I have often had my hair done by salon owners. They always expect a tip and I feel they sometimes think 15% is not enough. I usually end up giving 20% which seems to satisfy them. All the above communication is non-verbal, of course - but I can read all that stuff!
I was wondering about other customers like myself. I go to this salon about every 2-3 weeks, and the owner does my hair all the time. I get the impression from her all the time like she wants a tip. I probably tip her once and a blue moon. I feel that owners should get a tip at all, maybe I'm wrong. But, every time I give her my money, she looks at it or count it in front of me, just to see if there's a tip in there, which I never do. I'm wrong or what? Please let me know.
