I have lived in Los Angeles for 4 years and tried dozens of hair stylists. I have found that an average haircut is $40-$50 and a good haircut (not even a great one) ranges from $60-$100. (A lousy one is $20!). Highlights range from $80-$200.I find this excessive. I lived in London for most of my life and even London prices are lower than this.Is this normal, or am I looking in the wrong places. I find it really high and have to content myself with an average hair cut, when I would like a good one!Any ideas?

I live in NY and pay $35 (not including tip)--that's because I found a good salon in brooklyn, avoiding manhattan! I agree the prices are often outrageously high. And it seems that any major city is going to have higher prices for salon services and cuts. One time someone recommended I try Frederic Fekkai in NYC. When I called for an appt and asked the price, all my hair almost fell out: $200!!!! it's not like a haircut lasts forever, or i have $ to burn. But if you look off-the-beaten path, you will find lower prices. I dont know what the brooklyn equivalent would be in L.A., but I suspect there must be one: look for whichever cheaper neighborhood it is that people (who want to look as good as the lucky wealthy people, but can't afford LA prices) live in.The trick is, of course, to find a reputable salon in such an area. I ask to see stylists' portfolios, or else get a recommendation from someone in that area who has great hair.:) silvie
